Probably should just leave things alone. These sorts of things--playing with the balance of nature--always have unintended consequences. And it will never be the same anyway, being bred in captivity as opposed being completely wild. Then, there are the big game hunters, whom I detest.

They are extinct for a reason. Could be a change in climate, changes in available habitat, competition between species including humans, etc.

Here's one example. When Europeans first arrived here in the Americas, bison migrated the western plains by the millions. While it is true that they slaughtered them as part of their war effort with the native peoples, today's society with the cities and fences would not be conducive to their (bison's) way of life. Things have changed too much.

I'm guessing (NYT won't let me read the piece without subscribing) that the goal is simply to bring back the species for exhibition purposes rather than be repopulated into the wild. For that... I think bringing back all the dinosaurs would in fact be fascinating, only they may run into a few of the same problems the Jurassic Park movies were hinting at. There's even the possibility that that movie series was written from inside knowledge that it might one day actually be possible, so they were exploring the potential inherent dangers, and it eventually made its way into mainstream thought.

We'd have no problems containing them today, though they might make McNuggets out of a few people if the real predators got loose. But I think the only real question now is how ethical it would be to keep such animals in containment forever.

Btw, as an aside, (though you probably won't believe this), I've read Heaven accounts of people who have been taken up in spirit and have witnessed that dinosaurs exist there. They are peaceful, unlike how they would be here, but majestic and amazing to look upon...

And I think only Heaven would be fit for them now. No place for consummate predators, or even massive herbivores, in the modern age of man where our borders keep expanding and even the wildlife we have keeps getting marginalized and driven out.

Plenty of animals are quite ruthless in killing for a meal. They aren't made in the image .

While I do think the world to come it will be different I highly doubt that all the animals we ate will be staring at us in heaven .

I'm torn on it. It's like, I can see all the potential pitfalls. But how cool would it be to see a real life T-Rex? Childhood dreams and all that.

Here's what I would expect to happen if we were able to reincarnate a T-Rex. We'd just end up having to destroy them. They would not function or have a place in the world as it is today. And to bring them back into existence just to keep them in captivity is inhumane in my opinion.

Well, it's not like we'd drop them in the middle of New York City. They would be in a zoo of some kind with very high security. Not all that different than Jurassic Park. But with big generators in case the power goes out. Lol.

I don't know with the movies it sounds like a bad idea. Main reason species don't survive though is mostly because the ecosystem is disrupted, either by nature or man.

Nature, man, or other species. All species, even plant species, have an affect on their environment and over time, it can cause changes. I'm seeing this in my own front lawn. Twenty-eight years ago I decided to add some trees to our lawn so I purchased some silver maple, blue spruce, and black walnut seedlings. Now where the black walnut trees are, the grass underneath is struggling to survive. I was not aware of this at the time but this is because black walnut tree nuts and roots secrete a toxin called Juglone and it can be toxic to other plants. I'm a little concerned that I may have planted my maple trees too close. So far they are doing okay but time will tell.
