Okay this is not much of a contribution to the topic of this thread but I couldn't resist showing off my European pride.

Why would anyone be proud of being European today?

All western european countries have a true unemployment rating of 10-25% of people 18-30 years. This is not just true of Spain, Portugal and Greece, but also the UK, France, Norway and Denmark. If you don't understand what I mean by true unemployment then please take the time and educate yourself by reading state theory, preferably read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street-level_bureaucracy and also study the government financial reports done by the different regulatory commissions tasked to find government mismanagement.

The European Commission and parliament is strangling countries like Hungary, undermining the democratically elected government. The EU commission tries to ban democratic elections in Ireland. And now we have ESM that is not accountable to anyone. Why are you so proud?

I'm not against the EU on a philosophical level if the parliament was representative of the EU citizens and the commission accountable to the people or at least some form of rule of law. Europe is failing and failing hard.

I think Europe has about twenty years ahead of us with regard to social issues. We can look to them to see what we'll look like in twenty years.

And what social issues are you on about? Wellfare? The USA spend more money on wellfare than European governments. European wellfare benefits the rich more than poor than is the case in USA too. Read Public Choice III by Dennis C. Mueller.

I guess you are right when it comes to smoking bans. Though last I heard one city or state in the USA started banning soda bottles of a certain size. How is that progressive for you?

The netherlands have free marijuana though, but thats just the Netherlands.

Despite of your (rather condescending) assumptions about the state of my education I am well aware that the EU is in trouble.

That's not a reason to be less proud of it. Do you see any of the Americans here love their country less just because their economy is in trouble? They will love their government less (or hate it more), but not their country. Or would you love your girlfriend or wife less when she gets sick, makes poor choices, or when you are going through some sort of a marital crisis?
I see no contradiction in being proud on something that is not going well.

Also, the things that have been achieved can't be eradicated from history, even if he EU should ultimately fail and cease to exist.
And the value of a place or a country (or a union of countries) is not solely defined by their economical wellbeing or the performance of their government.

Maybe we're catching up faster than I thought. I think I would agree on the point that we're no different than anyone else. God blessed Europe, and we've seen the culture decay as God was abandoned. The truth is sometimes we just watch America and shake our heads and smile... and sometimes we don't smile.

If we are trapped in it, it is only to the extent that the value of the US $ always has an effect on other currencies...

America is on the fast track to becoming a goat nation. We really aren't what we used to be. Instead of fighting for justice, and good will, we fight for profits and oil. A nation that no longer claims to be under God, will also claim to be above his grace. Ever wonder why we have hit economic and downturn? Why our freedoms daily become nothing? Why we sprint towards a socialist nation?

Yes, others follow us. However; they are following us into an economic, moral, spiritual destruction.

I'm sorry as well, I had a bad day (I was backing out of my driveway and landed in a snow pit) and let my emotions get the better of me when I read this post about euro pride. The 20th century is the decline of europe as the center of economic, scientific and cultural superiority. And with the EU commission becoming more totalitarian everyday it will only get worse until it all ends in Nationalism, Fascism and Communism once again. I mean just look at Greece, UK, France and Germany the racist nationalist and even communist groups gain more power everyday while christian moderates loose power.

I totally agree with you, even though 70% of Norway believe in a higher power, not nearly as many are christian. Our state church is a joke in society (Though we provide much support, money, energy to elderly and the poor, but media ignores it). And private churches are few and declining.

Hi Mountainshield,

I heard a sad story last Christmas. A group of Christians went to Europe to produce a Christian cable program, and though the details are fuzzy, I remember hearing that in England they were turning old churches into bars, pubs, clubs. I don't know what they call them over there. I look to the church to see where a country is going, and I think it's fair to lay much of the blame at the foot of the church or at least an indication of the health of the church by the level of influence it has on society. In today's society, whether it be America or Europe, if the church isn't hated, then I'm suspicious of that church. To the world, the cross is foolishness.

I hope you didn't damage your car. Sounds like it would be safer at home with hot coffee or hot chocolate staying warm. I'll be on the forum, but if we don't cross thoughts until then, have a Merry Christmas.

duari91, I am ignorant of what a "goat nation" is but I agree that the US is on a downward spiral; towards a Sodom or Gammorah or Babel; the same as Rome which used to be the most powerful and educated force in the world. It is not just the murdering of bables that the US is answering for but much other immorality, perversions, and removing God from the place He really used to be. We have lost our fitting into the verse, "Blessed is the nation whose god is the Lord (Jehovah)." I am afread that God is going to make an example of us and even though we warn and plea for a repentence, Bible using Christians will just be regarded as an archaic, obsolete, and mythological faction of insignificance.

You basically got what a goat nation is. It is a modern day Sodom or Gammorah. In other words, it is a nation filled with unbelievers that will be subject to heavy judgement in the future. We can't change the hardened hearts, and unfortunately, the devil has done a lot of deceiving in this country. Not only has he convinced a majority of the populace that killing unborn babies is "okay," he has manufactured the post-modernist movement among youth. In other words, my fellow generation (generation X) believes that ALL paths lead to heaven, and not one religion is wrong, they are all right. It scares me when I think of it, but those who are left need to hold strong.

Claudya, any time you're lacking in confidence of your European pride, you might want to remember: the average German lives over a year longer than the average American; A baby born in Germany is more likely to live than a baby born in America (The USA has 3 more infant deaths per 1000 live births than Germany); and the USA has had to hire a German to coach their national football (soccer) team.

I usually take things too seriously, especially metaphysical inconsequential things like political discussions. and I interpreted your post as genuine, this is my fault though as I should have taken the time to read the thread more clearly.
