yeah....good question....i personally didn't get saved until The Lord moved on my heart in a big, big way. I wonder sometimes about how many conversions are genuine (not trying to be snotty, just...you know...).

Actually, that's my whole point.
I was reading a book and this statement was made.
The person had just heard the good news. Then he was prayed over.
But was this all that is necessary to be saved? Or does it take more?
What DOES it take?

i think it takes the work of The Holy Spirit, honestly. Not trying to sound too, too Calvinist, but...personally, I was just as lost after learning about Jesus as I was before, until some divine intervention=genuine conversion (" 'twas grace that saved a wretch like me").

I think I would ask someone who purported to have been party to that happening what they think it means. How they believe their prayers saved someone else.
I know prayer can work miracles. The sister of my best friend in high school came down with scarlet fever. She was bedridden, unconscious, and the Doctor said it was highly unlikely she would survive being she was quite young. The middle daughter in a family of six.
Her family were strong Catholics and their mother worked quite a bit with the church. They called their priest and a bunch of people came to form a prayer circle around the clock for this girl. They took turns in her bedroom praying from shortly after the doctor departed and through the night. The next day the girl arose from bed as if nothing happened , showered, ate, and went to school.
Today she's retired having served her entire working career with the Federal government. She's in her 50's. Pretty good for a little girl not expected to see her 9th birthday once upon a time.

This is how we know we are saved and need to teach this to others that are not, but yet seeking. Others can prayer for our salvation, but it is up to us to receive it.

for_his_glory posted one of the scriptures that shows how we are saved. It is a heart and mind thing that happens inside a person

If that "heart and mind thing" is not accompanied by good works in obedience to the LORD Jesus then it will not save anyone.
The "Heart and mind thing" is the starting point. It is the faith by which we are saved.
But faith without faithfulness (doing the good works which God established that we make our way of life - Eph 2:10) is as meaningless as a one sided coin.
Don't stop at the first step.
God's desire is that we grow in maturity to be just like Jesus.
Rom 8:29 (NKJV) For whom He foreknew, He also predestined
to be conformed to the image of His Son,
that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Jesus told His disciples, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Mat 5:16 NKJV)

This is a natural thing that occurs when you have been given the Holy Spirit. I would even say if you aren't doing the will of God, then you don't have the Spirit.

A very large portion (at least half) of the NT letters' content is composed of instructions on how a Christian is to behave. If it were a natural thing then it would have been unnecessary to instruct, command, and admonish believers to do those things.
It's not "automatic" because the Holy Spirit dwells withing the believer. The believer must make the choice to act on the leading of the Spirit and the teaching of scripture.

I agree that our will, will be a choice. But, if you love him you would've been given the Spirit and so you will be doing his will. Am I making sense? idk The scripture that says those that love the light will come into the light. So, we love him and we will listen to his Word. The "automatic" is loving him, so you do what he wishes.

Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments." (Jhn 14:15)
And, "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love." (Jhn 15:10)
If you truly love Jesus then you will want to do His will and keep His commandments because you will put the desires of the one you love above your own desires. (And, it seems to me that women understand that level of love better than men do. just imho and you seem to get it) I don't think a lot of people understand that level of love for Jesus. For many, it's just not that deep. It's real, but just not that deep.
So, the NT letters are filled with encouragement and admonition to do the things that please God (fruit of the Spirit) and not to do the things that will get you the 2nd death. (Works of the flesh.) Paul virtually hammers on it and James and Peter and John and Jude do also.
Jesus repeatedly tells us in parables and in so many words that our eternal condition (heaven or hell) depends on what we do: His will or our will. Do we show mercy to others or do we make sure we get ours? Our choice is critical.
"Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." (John 5:28-29)
If we don't have that level of love for Jesus that we would do anything for Him then we had better consider that wilfully choosing to disregard His command to love one another and our neighbor and even our enemies will earn us an eternity in hell because "the wages of sin is death", the first and the second deaths.
