I'm looking to get a great list of Christian Hymns to put on my Ipod - it would be great if you could share some great ones with me.

I'm more for the slower songs though, I dont really like the up-tempo ones :shrug

My favs are:

Old Rugged Cross
I'd Rather have Jesus
His Eye is on the Sparrow
If You Knew Him
How Great Thou Art
Rock of Ages

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lloyd.

There are CDs on Hymns. Try some stores first. I believe you will find them. There are few sites that have them. Some are free and some require you dip your hand into your pocket and....

Blessed assurance Jesus is mine...

Amazing grace
It is well with my soul
He touched me
Great is thy faithfulness
His name is wonderful

Sure can be hard to pick ONE

Well then you best make it to Heaven.. Here on earth i only make a joyful NOISE unto the Lord....

Family can sing and play music, i cant carry a tune in a radio.

I have trainned my ears to adapt to any kind of music. Just get your kitchen untensils ready and start the bang and music. I only need professional doctors though. Ear doctors! You know why? Of course you do.:toofunny :chin

Thanks for the replies folks!

Reba,

It is Well with my Soul is an all time favourite of mine. I love that hymn!

My personal favourite hymn is one of Faber's, "My God how wonderful thou art"
Such a deep lyric, and wonderful tune too.

OUR HEAVENLY FATHER.
My God ! how wonderful Thou art!
Thy Majesty, how bright!
How beautiful Thy Mercy-seat
In depths of burning light!

How dread are Thine eternal years,
O everlasting Lord!
By prostrate spirits day and night
Incessantly adored !

How beautiful, how beautiful
The sight of Thee must be,
Thine endless wisdom, boundless power,
And awful purity!

Oh how I fear Thee, Living God!
With deepest, tenderest fears,
And worship Thee with trembling hope
And penitential tears.

Yet I may love Thee, too, O Lord!
Almighty as Thou art,
For Thou hast stooped to ask of me
The love of my poor heart.

Oh then this worse than worthless heart
In pity deign to take,
And make it love Thee for Thyself
And for Thy glory's sake.

No earthly father loves like Thee,
No mother half so mild
Bears and forbears, as Thou hast done,
With me Thy sinful child

Just reading it through now moves me to worship! Amazing stuff!

a: This is really good.

Do you know who wrote it?

(Often the name of the hymn-writer can make it seem even more memorable, anyway.)

Hi Lloyd,

Here is one of my favorites. 'Come, Thou Almighty King'

Be Thou my Vision

&

A Mighty Fortess Is Our God

(If you can, make it a point to sing this one with 70,000 other people in a stadium like I did at Promise Keepers in '97. Just a little glimpse of what it's going to be like in the age to come)

Wow! I was in the Silverdome with ~70,000 men booming that song out! It was like thunder!

To more of my favorite hymns were also sung at that conference (or around then).

It Is Well With My Soul
Knowing You

I may never have another chance to belt those out with so many men again, and I am blessed for having that opportunity. :yes

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine
.
Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

There are so many superb, old hymns.

Hi farouk,

When I first became a Christian, I never sang any of the old hymns because the church I went to sang modern worship songs. I didn't start singing the old hymns until about 6 years after becoming a Christian. I noticed that though some of the music can be not as up beat, it really is the theology that draws you in. Many of the modern hymns or songs are great, but you can't replace the old hymns with the modern.
