In many places in scripture, we see that the Word of God is compared to milk or meat...food. Here:
1 Corinthians 3:1-2
3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able./(KJV)
Understand that Paul is not speaking to new converts here, but those in the church, established believers. It's very possible that one can get saved and attend church for forty years and never grow up in Christ. Very sad. What are they lacking? Nourishment, food. As the natural body needs food to grow, so does the spirit need food to grow. We are to live for the Spirit. The Word of God is spiritual food for the spirit. Are you malnourished? Do you neglect to feed your spirit? Have you ever wondered why you do not get closer to God and progress in your walk? Feed your spirit.
Matthew 4:2-4
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God./(KJV)
Here we see that Jesus was being tempted by the devil. He must have been famished, and yet, seemed to assign more importance to the Word of God, than to natural food. Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. Every word. That would be the entire bible. The laws, statutes, ordinances, testimonies, precepts...everything. Psalm 119 is all about food. It seems to harp on the laws and statutes and precepts of God, His commandments, but I realize that it is about food. Spiritual food.
Hebrews 5:14
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil./(KJV)
This is telling us that if we eat the strong meat of the Word, that our spiritual senses will be enhanced and grow. If you really want to grow in Christ and mature into a good and useful servant of the Lord, someone He can use...you need to digest his words.
Psalm 199:103
103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!/(KJV)
Really? So as (natural) food is to the mouth, the word of God is to the ears. The mellifluous Word of God, brothers and sisters!! Praise the Lord! There are many places in scripture which liken the Word of God to honey. We're to live for the spirit and raise our spirit man up as we would a child. Would you neglect to feed your child? No? So why is your bible gathering dust on the shelf? This remind me of the old Cherokee proverb.
The Two Wolves.
“One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, generosity, empathy, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about this for a minute and then asked the grandfather, “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
So feed your spirit brothers and sisters. With the Word of God.
