In 1 Samuel 17, after the battle with David, Saul asks, "As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is that young man?â€" v 55 - but in 1 Samuel 16 David had already been introduced to Saul "
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.â€

How do you reconcile the two?

Do kings always concern themselves with the family circumstances of their servants? Saul would have been told these details when he was seeking a harpist for relief. However Saul doubtless didn't consider the family information of a servant boy worth remembering. Saul may not have even recognized David's face.
