It can be an artistic expression, a way to blow off steam, a way to have fun, or an excuse to let go of yourself.
It depends on on the purpose it is being used for. If I'm listening to ministry while drawing I doubt it. If I'd be using it to rebel and live a "lifestyle" probably.

In my 30+ years walking with the Lord I have used this idea as a "litmus test"; if I can find anything anti-Christ or degrading or anything that goes against my beliefs and Christian morals in the music, I don't listen to that anymore. It may be that a certain group has some songs that are "bad" but I listen to some of their others or in the case of "Metal" and "Rap" I don't listen to any of it because it is, by its' very nature, hateful and anti-Christ. Examples of what I consider "good" music would be (I am giving a range) Roy Orbison and Pink Floyd. I have found nothing anti-Christ in any of either of these, just good music and lyrics.

All jokes aside, it's all about the lyrics. I'm confinced that if you listen to music with bad lyrics, that is not a sin, but I don't recommend it as it can possibly lead to sin.
I prefer stuff like Lincoln Brewster, Matthew West, and the Newsboys, but whatever you want. No Satan music though!!!!

I think it's a bit absurd to say that some genres of music are "holier" than others. Last time I checked God created everything and that includes rock and metal!

No, it isn't, but the typical lifestyle surrounding it generally is (same with a lot of hip-hop). But you see a lot more rock/rap artists that glorify God with their music nowadays, so it's improving.
The only thing I'd say is the death metal-esque stuff...which barely qualifies as music, and seems devoted to sounding as ugly and cacophonous as possible. But I would not technically call that sinful, it's just I don't see Jesus listening to those tunes.

Just because stupid people misused talent that God originally gave to them doesn't mean we should label the means it was done in as evil. Yeah, it stinks that the first people/forerunners of heavy and death metal used it to either glorify themselves, glorify Satan, or just flatout bash God. But that was their heart, not their genre of music.

Although Rock is not sinful in itself, it arose out of the philosophical point of view that people can find their own truth. This was a sort of New Age humanist movement that manifested itself in how the flow of music was played a certain way, beginning in the 60's. If you're interested to know, it's not a coincidence that some types of music sound a certain way. Even Beethoven used his music to convey a kind of humanist pantheism that he subscribed to, hence the dramatic prose that he used. I have nothing against Rock and Roll itself, but I really don't even listen to it anymore since I discovered Irish music and Christian hymnals. Now that's music that everybody should be listening to!

And I always am impressed at the musical talent I see in the high classes I work in ... I try to remember to encourage those kids, and sometimes will mention some of my musical talents, and favorite Christian bands. Some of the kids can relate to the Chrisitan music I like, and I'm 52!
My kids even like much of my music, including Classical, Bluegrass, and more ... And I like some most of their Christian music.
I agree that the lyrics are important. I don't want to listen to music that has lyrics that are mocking God or Christians or the Bible, or with profanity, or just plain nasty music.
