I've been doing reading and research on pet foods for the last three-four months. It has become a $14 billion+ industry, so that may tell you where I'm coming from.
I found out some facts that really bothered me... not just pet food concerns but concern for the very food products that find their way into the supermarkets and into us. The videos below will explain the rendering process and what is being rendered and added as by products and meat meal to pet food. If that isn't bad enough, some of the rendered slush is dried and sent off to China and other countries. They use it to feed livestock and also feed it to fish and seafood being raised in farms.
The first video is a brief interview with author, Ann Martin. I read her book, "Food Pets Die For". It had many "Pros" by critics but vary few "cons". The only con I remember reading was "... may be upsetting".
The book sure was!
The second one is a video by a Vet and former animal science major. He goes into some details about the rendering process and what is being rendered. You'll be shocked.
The third video is News clip that focuses on natural and organic pet food like Wellness. Pet foods from Wellness and Newman's Own have become my top two choices for my cat. It really pays off to understand what all that stuff is in the list of ingredients. Choosing the right food will result in a healthier pet who will live longer and can result in less trips to the vet.
