Hey guys. I'm somewhat new here. I'm enjoying discussions and eaves-dropping on disputes, but I'd like to start one of my own now.

My all-time favorite band has to be Skillet. Ever since I heard their first self-titled album, I was hooked. I have observed how they have mastered each sound and genre they have molded themselves into and am still, to this day, impressed at how well they can meet those specific places that cater to an eager audience's fancy. From Nirvana-esque garage-grunge, to Synth-Rock/Pop, to Contemporary Rock, to straight up hard 'n heavy alternative rock, backed up with unsynthesized violin and cello players (even on stage). I went to AwakeningFest 2009 in Leesburg, VA, and it was worth stayin out in the cold rain to see them. They put on some amazing shows.

I have been toooo...let's see. *scratches head.* ...5 shows of theirs? Yeah, I think that's about right. My first one was at Acquire the Fire before the Twin Towers fell. That was back in their Alien Youth phase. Heavy synth and distortion rattled my brain in a fashion much to my liking. Laser lights and colorful, snazzy oscillatations were going off on huge screens on either side of the stage, and I experienced my first moshe pit...which was amazing. (Then Seventh Day Slumber came out even before anyone knew who they were, but that's not what I'm goin for here. lol)

Back in those days, John Cooper (lead singer), at least took the time to even read something from the Bible ON STAGE. It felt good and just plain fun to be in this whole Jesus-gig back in those days. I was in middle school then. I'm 6 years out of high school currently. Moving on... (I'm getting to a clincher point for those of you who are wondering).

Next album they released I was quick to get. Collide. I made the crude distinction that they sounded quite a bit like Linkin Park in some of their songs. I liked this. Skillet always took a genre of music I LOVED and put a message of hope instead of leaving their audience in a critical sense of despair. bands like Three Days Grace, Linkin Park, HIM, and Hawthorne Heights always tried relating to their audience...but what good is that if you don't have a solution to the problem? Skillet was my answer to those kinds of bands. They always seemed to have a message of hope and a light at the end of the tunnel.

....But now, we have a problem..

They released Comatose. Don't get me wrong. GREAT album. Rebirthing is an excellent depiction of what it sholud feel like crossing over the fence into God's infinite grace. But when I heard "The Older I Get," and even "Open Wounds" from their later release of Collide, I reached a point where I ended up scratching my head. ..."Where is the light at the end of the tunnel, here? Was there one to begin with? ...Did I just miss it or overlook it? Did it get lost in translation?" I began fearing that Skillet's focus on subject matter was becoming too similar to that of the bands that they were touring with. (i.e. Three Days Grace, Saliva, Taking Back Sunday). Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with touring with those kinds of bands. I don't doubt they've reached and touched lives that way...but I'm seeing a pattern. And not just with the band Skillet.

Us, as Christians...we are trying to compete with the world. Even I'M guilty of this. I want to go into movie-making, utilizing 3D CG similar to that of Final Fantasy VII-Advent Children because I wonder why Christians aren't doing this type of awesome work. Then I got to a point where I didn't "mind" having some objectionable material put into it just to buy somemore eyes to watch the movie. But when you get to a point where you are compramising your message for the sake of acceptance...it's like saying your integrity now has a price tag. ..Since when does integrity have a price tag?

...I bought the album Awake just before I went to AwakeningFest...and my heart sank. Out of the 12 songs they have on the album...only about 4, maybe 5, have a message with that light at the end of the tunnel. Not to mention, the last track, "Lucy," is a travesty of a track to leave a listening audience with.

Here, my FAVORITE band....has gone emo on me. Everything in the field of music that I stand against, they have bought.

"Hero" is pretty sick (by that, I mean awesome).

"Monster"....okay, this is a guilty pleasure of mine. No light in the tunnel, but it hypes me up before a sword-match with my friends.

"Don't Wake Me" hit me pretty hard, especially being only the third track on the whole thing. Made me a tinge sad, not hearing a message of hope, but rather more of a false hope instead. It tells about someone who doesn't want to let go of their past. It can't be talking about thinking about how things were with God. The lyrics have to spell out something wordly. A relationship gone wrong.

"Awake and Alive," on the other hand, is my prayer for all my unsaved friends. I LOVe this song. Good stuff. "One Day Too Late" is another great song. Telling of how our time is limited to spread the love of Jesus and to not be ashamed of what we should be doing as Christians.

"It's Not Me, It's You." This song, I related to my girlfriend, being that we both despise her parents, but even she heard it, and then said.."Yeah, okay, they know my situation, but now what?" No light at the end of the tunnel. If I want to hear this song's message, I'll just put in "The Last Night," because they're actually hope there. Not here. Not anymore, at least.

"Should've When You Could've" ticked me off. That was it. I didn't even NEED to hear the rest of the album. My disappointment reached an all time high, and it just kept growing.

"Sometimes." ...Excuse me?!?! The part in the fricking CHORUS where it says "I had no idea someone else could be as messed up as me." and "Sometimes I don't wanna feel better. Sometimes I DON'T want to be put back together." What the CRAP is this?!

And then...they change it up with the song "Never Surrender." Good lyrics, but it sounds way too mopy for me to enjoy it.

"Forgiven" I can enjoy a little more, but by the time I reached the song through all that shin-digging non-sense of emotional poo, I shrugged it off.

....And the icing on the cake....."Lucy." I don't even know if I wanna tell you what I heard in this song, for those of you who still wish to hold Skillet in the high esteem I once did. It made me want to cry, two-fold. One, it was EXTREMELY depressing, and two, I had to realize how far my most revered group of people, ones who were so ON FIRE and SHAMELESS, and OPEN about how in love they were with Jesus, has gone emo and bought into the conformist mindset.

Veering off topic for a moment, I have HD cable now, and my family recently got this new Gospel Music Channel. They had a "Faith and Fame" thing goin on, and tobymac was featured. The show gave the full-out synopsis of how dcTalk got started and how they progressed. Censors actually approached dctalk and asked them to TONE DOWN the Jesus thing in their songs in order to attract more listeners and to not offend too many people. This was back in the early 90's people. Shocking, huh? What's even more shocking is this. ...Do you guys know what their response was?

"Jesus Freak" - "I don't really care if they label me a Jesus Freak. There ain't disguising the truth."
A resounding "NO!" When I saw that, I had the biggest smile on my face. I was touched, even though I wasn't the biggest dctalk fan. That song sold MILLIONS and MILLIONS of copies, btw. Christian Music history in the making.

THAT is how we should respond. Conforming is easy. Now Skillet is just another emo band. If they stood their ground, EVERYONE would turn and still notice them, but in case you haven't noticed, they're starting to take the backburner already.

I still listen to Ardent Worship to put me in a good uplifted mood. I still listen to the song "Rest" from their Invincible album to help me know that God has me in His hands. Skillet is now a reminder to me how we ALL should be careful to not conform and to stand our ground no matter how many times the censors approach us asking us to tone things down or to compramise our message for more $$.

I'm awake and I'm alive. Now I know what I believe inside. Now, it's my time. I'll do what I (He) want, Cuz this is my life. Right here. Right now. I'll stand my ground, I'll never back down. I know what I believe inside. I'm awake and I'm alive.

Questions? Comments? Forwards? I'm eager to hear what others have to say.

Yeah, but part of them is still focused on Christ, just not enough...
This album is more of an interpretation thing, so us Christians can say:"Oh, he's also talking about God/Jesus/Satan in this song, while everyone else can be like:"I relate to this, my GF died/broke up with me.

My favorites are:

Rebirthing

Savior

It's Not Me It's You (Song about how Satan makes us believe it's all our fault, and how he whispers his lies and temptations in our ears.)

Hero

Comatose(Relates to God if you interpret it "right".)

Awake and Alive

Monster (When we sin, and we choose to go against God, even though we said we wouldn't; about when we come to know our nature.)

Yes, you see what I'm getting at.

It's like they left the interpretational aspect of the songs waaaay too open in a contextual sense.
P.O.D. did this once. The song "Dreaming of Zion" on The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. But..they got away with it in my mind. Sure, the original intent of the song was meant for the movie, but if you do the math, there's a deeper meaning to their song. I liked this.

What Skillet has done is similar, but they've reversed the process. To Christians like us, they've made songs "sound" Christian, but what's to stop someone else from believing that it's completely relational and earthly? And I KNOW they used that ploy to shut the censors up and sell more records.

I'll agree to this. I read John's synopsis on how he likes and views the song and I had to eat my words I had written after I read that little exerpt. There IS freedom realizing that things aren't always our fault.

The song "Sometimes" confuses me.

The song "Sometimes" confuses me.
"Sometimes" can be seen as when we grow aggrivated with life/someone, and we know we're supposed to do God's will, but we just don't FEEL like it.
It's about our breakdowns.
Sometimes I feel so sadistic and selfish, and I want someone to hurt like I do.
I know I shouldn't, but theres that part of me that says " I don't care!"
It's hard to be Mr.Positive all the time. :lol
It's hard to pray for those who wrong you, and love your enemies.

You can see this in Jesus himself, when he grew tired of the people's constant demands:

"He answered them, “You unbelieving generation! How much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I endure you? Bring him to me.†(Mark 19:19)

It's about our human nature colliding with our Christian life. :chin

yes, but where's the solution in the song?
that's my clincher point here. Yes, I agree that being in this world can get EXTREMELY tiresome (and thank you for that verse reference. opened my eyes just a tad on the character of Jesus in a new light.)

But, is it just me, or has "relating" to your audience, and ONLY relating to your audience, seem a little redundant if you're not gonna spell out the solution. Skillet used to do that. They don't do that anymore. :sad

Thanx friend. This was all I wanted. Someone to throw my ideas and thoughts back and forth to.

I just checked out some older Skillet like Collide album and Alien Youth album...
Must say: Awesome! :clap

Aren't they?! Earth Invasion is my favorite song on Alien Youth. Collide has "Collide" and "A Little More."
Those are my favs. I wanna animate a fight scene between Michael and Satan to the song "Stronger" from Alien Youth. lol.

Man..
I just listened to Scarecrow and I Can, and ...wow.
I love them.
They have done EVERY sound possible!
...Wow. :o

Too bad he might lose if you base it off the present... :sad

nah. Revelation says Michael will put Satan away in the end. ....man, I wish I could see THAT battle.

Also, I've been listening to "Monster" over and over. Surprisingly, the effect isn't that of me getting angry or hyped up at everything. The more I listen to the song, even if the chorus screams the thought of feeling like a ravaging beast, I actually realize how much I NEED God, and it calms me out in the long run.

Sure, listening to the song in the moment gets me really hyped because it sounds fricking sweet, but on my home once, after falling in a way that I told myself I'd never fall again for a long while, the song reminded me how insufficient I am, and how much all of us 'monsters' need that saving grace.

I still feel they didn't need the song "Sometimes" on the record. That was too much for me, and that's saying quite a bit.

Skillet, "Invincible"

We only have two (?) Skillet albums, and one Christian DVD with music videos, including several songs by Skillet with a small audience, and some testimonies about the Lord.

My oldest son has the other Skillet album (can't remember which one). I have the album, "Invincible," which is one of my favorite Christian CDs!

My favorite Skillet songs:

-- Best Kept Secret
-- You're Powerful
-- Say It Loud
-- You're In My Brain

Invincible had that "futury" sound to it. Like, everything around you hovers, goes really fast, and has bright neon lights everywhere. Alot of their music videos had those effects back when the album was released. Their shows had alot of green laser lights and oscillations, too. It was totally awesome and surreal.

So when I listened to "You're Powerful," I imagined some awesome dudes getting their hovercar posse together and just taking an extreme fast ride on some dimly lit highway. People with hoverboards would fly in and out of view. Weird I know, but that's what the song made me feel like doing. And then, the song "Dive Over In" from the Hey You, I Love Your Soul album was a pure futuristic racing track. Made me want to play Wipeout on the Playstation.

Gosh, I miss their older stuff. I want more synth-rock and Industrial stuff back from them...but I know I'll never get it back again. :shame

Oh, man, I am addicted to skillet (Thus frying-pan-addict) I've turned a dozen or more friends into Skillet fans. Some were Christian, some were non-Christian. When either one hears a skillet song it's not too long before they ask me: Mark, This skillet song is "Kill me, heal me" What on earth does that talk about? That is a perfect opportunity to crack open a Bible and proclaim "It is no longer I who lives, but it is Christ who lives in me" Other times a friend will be listening to monster and ask "Monster? How is that a 'Christian' song." It gives another opportunity to share the Gospel.

Ultimately though I agree with you. I miss the classical Skillet that had Christian lyrics no mistake about it. One thing is for sure though. No matter what the Skillet album is, Comatose, Awake, Collide, Skillet, Hey You I love your soul, etc. They have some of the most powerful lyrics out there that people can connect with.

oh, dude, I totally agree. I've used both Skillet and FM Static's song "Take Me As I Am" to aid me in actually bringing one of my best friends to Christ. (Best feeling EVER, btw).

Favorite songs of Skillet varies with time and circumstance. I have so many favs from them. lol.
"It's Not Me, It's You" is slowly becoming a favorite of mine, not only for the sake of realizing that it's somebody else being a poison in my life, but it also has shown me that I can be that very same poison myself, and it's something that I should fear and stray away from.

"Whispers In the Dark" just sounded plain awesome, but the lyrics fisted my right in the face last week when I realized that I was in the dark, and felt like there was no way out. It reminded me that God does listen even when you feel the furthest away. "Falling in the Black" was also an apt option for that time.

I normally listen to Ardent Worship while I'm washing cars at work. It puts me in a good mood and lifts my spirits.

Absolutly my favorite band of all time. Each album keeps getting better. Each album has a song on there that hits me and seems to identify with things I've gone through or have felt.

They have a vision and a message, yes they tour with some secular bands, but the idea for them is to get out a message.

The songs that hit home to me is Open Wounds, because the lyrics remind me of my falling out with my father. It simply states "I'm not giving up, giving in" to the "war" between the selfless and selfish. My father lived in sin; porn, alcohol, squandering money... he didn't love himself, and searched for love in self pity. I tried forgiving him on many occasions and his self pity never stopped. He hurt me, my sister, my mother. So when the lyrics say "How could you hate me when all I ever wanted to be was you?" I can relate. "How can you love me when all you ever gave me were open wounds?" I can relate.

Loved Would It Matter as well. Something I felt a couple years back when I felt the absence of loved ones and friends, even God.

John Cooper writes these songs to reach people, and he succeeds in doing it. The songs sound great as he does it too.
