1 THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; 2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Mk 1.
Mark begins his gospel to the children of Israel by quoting the Old Testament prophecy in Malachi 3:1.
3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: Mal 3:1a
Mark seeks to establish that John the Baptist is the prophesied prophet that would herald the coming King and Messiah of Israel.
And this he does beautifully.
