Here in scripture is the lake of fire mentioned:

NKJV Revelation 20:13-14. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

NKJV Revelation 21:8. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

When molten magma comes to the earth's surface, it turns into lava, which dries. Molten magma beneath the earth's surface continues to burn. This is the only lake of fire on earth!

But the Bible doesn't say the Lake of Fire is on Earth.
It clues us in...
Genesis 19:24
Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

Luke 17:29
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Revelation 14:10
The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

It will be here on earth, a larger event than the one that 'rained' down on Sodom and Gomorrah....

Revelation 20:9
And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

None of this tells me that the Lake of Fire is on Earth. I understand that the Lake of Fire is eternal.

2Pe_3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

The lake of fire may be a real place or a metaphor as scripture gives no literal location, but is very descriptive as a place of outer darkness and torment and being eternal as all those people including Satan, the beast and the false prophet that are cast into it will be remembered no more.

The duration of punishment for the one cast into the lake of fire is everlasting. Isaiah speaks of the everlasting burning of the fire that shall never be quenched and of the worm which shall never die (Isaiah 33:14; 66:24). David said that some would awake unto eternal life and others unto shame and everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2). John the Baptist and Jesus spoke of the unquenchable fire (Matthew 3:12; Mark 9:43). Paul the Apostle speaks of how the lost will be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord (II Thessalonians 1:9).

The Apostle John says that the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever; and they shall have no rest day and night; and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever (Revelation 14:11; 19:3; 20:10). Jesus said that the lake of fire is a furnace of fire in Matthew 13:41, 42 and outer darkness in Matthew 22:13.

The fact that the lake of fire is eternal is plain from the following verses where it is described as:
1. Everlasting fire.......................Matthew 25:41
2. Everlasting punishment...........Matthew 25:46
3. Eternal damnation..................Mark 3:29
4. Everlasting destruction.......... II Thessalonians 1:9
5. Everlasting contempt..............Daniel 12:2
6. Torment forever and ever.......Revelation 14:9-11
7. Blackness of darkness forever.....Jude 1:13
8. Vengeance of eternal life............Jude 1:7
9. Lake of fire--forever and ever......Revelation 20:10
10. Second death--forever..............Revelation 20:14
11. Elements melt, earth and works are burned up.......2Peter Chapter 3

God gives us a description as in fire and brimstone which can be used literal as in Sodom and Gomorrah burned to ashes and as a metaphor for torment, suffering, punishment or as Matthew 8:12 describes it as outer darkness. The New Testament description is a bottomless pit (abyss) (Revelation 20:3), a lake (Revelation 20:14), darkness (Matthew 25:30), death (Revelation 2:11), destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:9), everlasting torment (Revelation 20:10), a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30), and a place of gradated punishment (Matthew 11:20-24; Luke 12:47-48; Revelation 20:12-13), everlasting fire Matthew 25:41, everlasting punishment, Matthew 25:46, lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Jude 1:7 clearly states an example of eternal fire. This is the same Greek word that is used for everlasting fire and everlasting punishment as used in Matthew 18:8 and Matthew 25:41,46 (Notice: The place, as no real name is given, where the unsaved go is everlasting punishment, and not everlasting punishing. The punishment is eternal in its results, not in its duration. Unquenchable fire is a fire that cannot be quenched or put out until everything in its path is burned up.

In my own minds eye I see the lake of fire as a place where those who have rejected God, whether they be good or bad people, burning in a torment (fire and brimstone could be a metaphor for torment) of having to see those who have heard the call of God and have accepted Him and now live in a place of paradise with all the fullness of God in all His glory. No more tears, no more hurts, pain sickness, etc, etc. Those in the lake of fire are outside the realm of God continuing in all their sin, sickness, hurts, pain tears, etc. etc., but can see those who are in the glory of the Lord like looking through a window and wanting what others have, but will never have it and this is their torment for eternity as they are constantly consumed with the fire that burns in their souls for what they have rejected and now to late to receive.

2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Mat_8:12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

The gnashing of teeth make people thing they are gnashing their teeth in pain. But:
Psa 37:12 The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth.

This makes me think of an old cartoon of a jailhouse where the sheriff has the killer inside and he is outside with a shotgun facing a whole mob of people wanting to lynch the guy and their teeth really stand out as they shout.

This makes me wonder if those in Hell or wherever they are, are suffering from a bipolar type of thing. One minute they are weeping and depressed, and the next minute they fly into a fit or rage and blaspheme God. Imagine having to suffer though those mood changes forever.

Weeping means crying. They cry in hell. Gnashing of teeth means angry. Those in hell have anger and hatred in their hearts. This is the human condition without God in the afterlife. God changes our hearts. Our souls are salvaged (restored) by the power of our great Savior, Jesus. He removes any anger and hatred in our hearts and gathers us to our people in heaven were we spend eternity with Him, The Father, angels, family and friends, eternally in bliss. This, I believe is what Jesus meant by being "born again". Our souls have to be restored to the inbreathe of creation, when God looked upon mankind and said we are good. This is the only way we can be in heaven.

Also, brimstone is an old-fashioned name for sulfur, a chemical that can be found in volcanoes.

The lake of fire....

It's described by Moses as such...

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
And Paul too wrote of it..

For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake

Putting all the scriptures together, I have come to the conclusion that lake of fire is mentioned in 2 Peter 3. I believe the Lord Himself is a fire to which fleshy men (likened to chaff) are burned up but the righteous won't experience the second death because they are likened unto Christ and can't be burnt up (c.f. 1 Peter 1:7) - only that part of us which is not of the Spirit (c.f. 1 Corinthians 3:15). The fire of the Lord does not mean the earth itself can't also become that lake of fire to physically burn up this world as the 2nd earth age ends and we enter the third and last (from Genesis 1:3 until the time where a new heaven and earth is created takes place during this present earth age, i.e. "which are now" c.f. (2 Peter 3:7)

Yes, the "lake of fire" destroys death and "hell" (the grave) where the dead are buried. The Bibe says

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 1Cor.15:54 (Isa.25 is what Paul is citing. He's saying God will use a "mountain" to take what was covered, or hidden on earth.

Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life Jn.11:25 KJV

Death is ultimately destroyed at the same
time as the resurrection, which is when Jesus appears as a blazing fire as far as the eye can see. A great big lake of fire.
NKJV Revelation 21:8. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
The point is the fire only destroys the unrepentant, not those who made themselves ready to meet the King of Heaven and Earth,

He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteouss till: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Rev.22:11 KJV

Believers persevered walking with Jesus. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. Rev.13:10 KJV

The heat will descend from Heaven but in the blink of an eye.

The symbolic description of the lake of fire is evident from its scriptural context. Death and Hades [common grave]” is said to be hurled into this “lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:14) Death, obviously, cannot be literally burned. Moreover, the Devil, an invisible spirit creature, is thrown into the lake. Being spirit, he cannot be hurt by literal fire.-Revelation 20:10. Compare Exodus 3:2 and Judges 13:20.

It is evident that this lake cannot represent the death man has inherited from Adam. (Romans 5:12).) It must be symbolic of another kind of death-one that is without reversal or a “second death.” Consequently, those not found written in “the book of life,”-unrepentant opposers of God’s sovereignty-are hurled into the lake of fire, meaning eternal destruction.-Revelation 20:15.

Sorry, but Moses and Mount Sinai does not describe the lake of fire which is reserved for those to be punished at the time of the final judgement.

This realm will destroy the mind, that your memory is burnt and all understanding of who you are will be gone, this is that death. In the beginning it was agreed that man will have everlasting life before creation. The Lake will still be when the New Heavens are created. When the Angels remove them from this place and place them after their part in it they will be place where the Spirit determines.

Revelations 21
8 But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

The dead lose the memories of their lifetimes. God, who forgets our sins, remembers our family and friends in our lifetimes as we are gathered to our people in heaven.

NKJV Proverbs 10:7. The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.

NKJV Isaiah 43:25. “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake;
And I will not remember your sins.

NKJV Genesis 25:8. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

I agree,

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Rev.20:14 KJV

Our God shall come and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. Psa.50:3 KJV

O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: Hos.13:14 KJV

the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels In flaming fire 2Thes.1:7-8

For our God is a consuming fire. Heb.12:29 KJV

It will happen as Sodom and Gomorrah only this time it will encompass all the wicked and sin and consume them so they cease to exist..

The fire that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah was of fire and brimstone. It's possibly that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with volcanic eruptions. Another theory is that the fire and brimstone could have been caused by a cosmic airburst.

They are thinking now that it might have been a bolide (Extremely bright meteor that often explodes in the atmosphere). Here is a few bits about another city from Smithsonian magazine:

At the time of the disaster, around 1650 B.C.E., Tall el-Hammam was the largest of three major cities in the valley. . . .
Tall el-Hammam’s mudbrick buildings stood up to five stories tall. Over the years, archaeologists examining the structures’ ruins have found evidence of a sudden high-temperature, destructive event—for instance, pottery pieces that were melted on the outside but untouched inside. . . .
The researchers concluded that warfare, a fire, a volcanic eruption or an earthquake were unlikely culprits, as these events couldn’t have produced heat intense enough to cause the melting recorded at the scene. That left a space rock as the most likely cause. . . .
Because experts failed to find a crater at the site, they attributed the damage to an airburst created when a meteor or comet traveled through the atmosphere at high speed. It would have exploded about 2.5 miles above the city in a blast 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb used at Hiroshima, . . .
“Air temperatures rapidly rose above 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit,” Moore explains. “Clothing and wood immediately burst into flames. Swords, spears, mudbricks and pottery began to melt. Almost immediately, the entire city was on fire.”
Seconds after the blast, a shockwave ripped through the city at a speed of roughly 740 miles per hour—faster than the worst tornado ever recorded. The cities’ buildings were reduced to foundations and rubble.
“None of the 8,000 people or any animals within the city survived,” Moore adds. “Their bodies were torn apart and their bones blasted into small fragments.”
Corroborating the idea that an airburst caused the destruction, the researchers found melted metals and unusual mineral fragments among the city’s ruins.
[end of quotes]

Just like in Jonah,
Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

The Lord could have prepared a great meteor for the cities. Not out of nothing, but just moving an already existing one to come in at the right time, angle and speed and so forth.
