why do we say that the sabbath is on the first day of the week when the bible clearly say the seventh? exodus 20: 8-11

This has been asked many times on this board. Sunday is not the sabbath. Saturday was the sabbath of the Old Testament, their day of rest.

Churches meet on Sunday because it's the first day of the week when the apostles met together.

The bible says:

(Rom 14:5) "One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike. Let everyone be fully convinced in his own mind."

actually it was the roman catholic church who changed it from saturday to sunday. it was changed because they thought they had the power to do so and they thought it would also be more suitable because jesus rose on the first day. but, who is man to change God's law?

Christians were gathering together on Sunday in the book of Acts:

(Acts 20:7) On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and he prolonged his speech until midnight.

Sunday was the day they gathered and had communion. And as you can see the speaker was long winded.

so why not go on saturday?

Why not monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, or even friday!?

What does God require?

Love mercy
Do Justive,
Walk Humbly with your God.

Something tells me we are to do that everyday of the week!

Hi ALV,

This is a guess as to why not Monday to Friday. . . because God had selected Saturday as His day of rest and this is reiterated in Creation, the law and even in the NT. That is not to say that Christians can't meet on any day of the week. . . but the issue is not when to meet BUT when to rest.

There are three other aspects about the Sabbath:

1. there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
2. Jesus rested perfectly from His works on the Sabbath during the crucifixion.
3. In the Creation account God rested on the seventh day and sanctified it. There was no sin in the world at that stage yet the Lord God proformed an addition work - call it what you will - of sanctification in a world that was withoiut fault or sin.

So there is a great deal of intrigue surrounding the Sabbath.

I can't prove this, but I think that they chose the first day of the week because they were giving their first day to God, or the firstfruit of their week.

Actually, by our method of determining the time and day, that verse would point to our Saturday evening. It was their first day of the week because they started and ended their days at sunset.

There is no Biblical mandate for changing the day of the Biblical Sabbath to any other day, unfortunately.

I'm not referring to changing the sabbath in any way. The sabbath rest is what we now enter into.

Simply pointing out that the first day of the week when they started meeting together. It had nothing to do with the sabbath.
