"The woman spoke to an audience of her own. She spoke about her husband, Jack, who'd been a sailor when she met him. ..She waited at each corner for the light to change , ..Her dress rustled; her brocken shoes scuffed. She paused at a wire rubbish bin and fished through it. 'Nothing today' Susie Q , ' called a hot-dog vendor whose cart occupied the corner.' I ain't got rid of yesterday's buns yet.
She grumbled. ' That your dog , Susie? ' Allright,' the vendor said...' I was just gonna throw them away anyway.'
He handed her two stale hot-dog buns.
Nop wagged his tail and grinned. She dropped a piece of bun.
' Go ahead. Dont say I never gave you nothin'....She tucked the steel lead into one of her bags , which held two skirts , a holey wool sweater, and old magazine and a statue of Jesus . She always set it by her bedside , when she had one.
She also carried an envelope with her Social Security card , her birth certificate, her high-school diploma, her certificate of marriage to Jack D. But for the grace of God there gose anyone of us I would think.
