There is a generous man who has a tree in his garden that produces food all year round. So much so that he has no need for any other food from different sources, because his tree never stops producing food. No one else in the world has a tree like his, and the tree only is capable of growing in his garden because of the soil.

He is a generous man, giving out the food from his tree to anyone who needs it. In fact, he put a sign up that says "free food forever, come get all you need". Many people come to him to get this food, some come daily, some every so often, others just stopped by once to try this food - but never returned. His tree produces so much that he never can give out all it has. Many of those who come to get the food try to pay him, but he will not accept their money. He has all the money he ever needs and he finds enjoyment in just giving the food away.

Along comes a young girl, who see's the sign in the yard and decides to speak with the man about this "free food forever". She asks the man if she can have the tree, of course, the man replies "this tree only grows in my garden". Then she says "your sign said I could have this free food forever", He replies "yes, you may, come get all you need".

She is not sure what to think. She wants to go live far away from this place, but she really likes the idea of this free food forever. She thinks it over and decides to tell the man that his sign is a little misleading. After all, it says free food forever, so if he does not give her the free food - forever - then he is not being truthful.

He assures her that it is free, it is forever, but it is only available where he is - there is nothing he can do about that fact. She gets upset - and she does not know what to do. He is troubled, he wants to give her all the food she wants, but he knows that if she lives far away he cannot get the food to her. So he tells her that there is plenty of room for her to live near him - even building her a place of her own.

The girl is excited, she decides this is great! So she moves into the place and is very happy, always having the food she needs to live on forever. When she needs food she simply visits the generous man, and he gives her exactly what she needs. Then along comes a young man.

He has the same thoughts as the young girl had, and the response from the generous man is the same. Building him a place to live there also so he can have the food forever. Things are a little different though, the young man decides he wants to live somewhere else. So one night the young man decides to take part of the tree with its food - after all, the sign said "free food forever, come get all you need" and the young man felt that is what he needed.

So the young man leaves, taking the tree and food, and goes to live in a place far away. Years go by and the man returns to the place where the generous man lives. The young man is very sick, the part of the tree he took with the food died soon after he arrived where he decided to live because it could not grow in the soil where he planted it.

The young man was very upset with the generous man because he felt that the generous man lied that the food is forever. The generous man tried to reason with him, telling the young man that the food is free forever, the young man just needed to receive the food from him. This was not what the young man wanted, he wanted the tree - he wanted the food forever - but he wanted to live in another place than the generous man lived.

Sadly, the generous man and the young girl watched as the sick young man walked away. Still, the sign was in the yard, "free food forever, come get all you need" - yet the sick young man would not believe it could be so and died in the place where he went to go live.

Question - did the generous man actually lie about giving away free food forever?

Cool story. There are other practical things to consider if it was real. Food, and shelter are provided, but water and work are also something too. But the story isn't about that, or about why the young man wanted to leave (outside of being greedy and wanting things his way). The generous man didn't lie.
