it should in the end always boil down to this...

Do Not Cause Another to Stumble
13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 1 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. 1

This view has led to a lot of hopelessness in myself because I cant live up to the perfect spotless image christianity requires, but it's one small step at a time

This statement is very worrisome to me, because it sounds like you are not allowing yourself to live in His Grace. It is one thing to strive to be holy. It is another to have the belief that Christianity requires perfection. This can only result in what you have come to see of yourself; that you are a failure. This I can tell you with confidence. It is out of hell that this notion seeks to undermine the work that Christ has done in you.

I implore you to read the first 4 chapters of Romans, and let them penetrate your heart. Not accepting His Grace, and demanding perfection can only lead one to be despondent, and I'm afraid you have fallen prey to this lie. Christ's sacrifice covers your shortcomings. It is true that the result of this Grace should be the desire to live your life for Him, but you cannot achieve what Christ did on your behalf by things you do or don't do.

as much as i love star trek and stargate.the former is very liberal at times and politically correct. star trek the the next generation has done several episodes trying to make the watcher think about the lbgt.

i can if i look around post the very episodes and add ds9 to that list.

Ahh! A fellow geek! I like Star Trek as well, DS9 was my favorite. But I'm an American British geek, in technical terms.

I don't like it when people are condescending to me and give me these weird looks because I said I watched last Sunday's Desperate Housewives or saw Torchwood last year. Sure they have lots of shortcomings but if I wasn't learning anything and if they were really causing me to doubt my faith, I'd switch them off!

i'm not one that shall judge but if one is lead by the spirit to repent and give these things up one should. i do think a pastor should teach from philippians 4:8 and expound to include that in revalance to modern tv. some shows are too much.

lol, i was watching trek before you were born. man when did i get that old:lol

I don't really feel led since I get so much out of TV that improves my walk with God. That Buffy episode led me to spontaneously thank God and encourage others around me, letting me know I loved them. And Buffy is one of the worst of the lot. God is using them and I'm always excited to find out what lesson He has in mind for me next.

ok learning from known new age philosophy inspired shows make you learn from god? i have seen him do that with blatent christian charachters such as the touched by angel(way off theologically on some things) and also the xmen charachter that is a catholic called night crawler, though in the movies he isnt.

but buffy that is way too much new age. you should really educate yourself in the bible. and that is the source not something close that has new age moral issues.i could do what you do and did before i came to the lord. i did believe briefly that all religions were equal and had equal acess to God.

My problem is that I can't understand any lessons from the Bible unless I see examples. That's why drama is so powerful to me. Nothing teaches me better than acting in a play based in a moral value and next to that, seeing an example of what God was saying when He said not to commit adultery or kill someone or anything like that really works for me.

That and like I've said before, I cannot talk to fellow Christians about these things, at least not at the moment (I mean in person).

huh?really.life isnt an example.so fake and dramatised shows about entities and locations arent? i wouldnt talk about war to my soldiers by using this now would i?

Exosquad (TV Series 1993–1995) - IMDb

think about life is more then a stage. reality is out there. it takes time for one to learn things and one will always be learning.when i came to christ i had and still have major issues.i was into some occult, a bi male, and also self-loathing.and couldnt socialise.most of this is gone. forgot i also poor job skills and low self-esteem.

I think God is honored when we see his redemptive purposes played out in the stories of others, even if they're the stories of pagans and vampires and desperate housewives. Truth is truth. Beauty is beauty. Redemption is redemption. To say the only source for these things is Christians is very short-sighted. Because that makes us as Christians the source of beauty and truth instead of the God from whom the actually come.

TV-wise I watch what is interesting to me. This means lots of cop shows and things that cause me to laugh (and luckily the TV show Cops fulfills both roles, there is nothing funnier than seeing some crack head getting tazed).

Movie-wise I watch things that are not scary and not overly sexual. That's about it, if it isn't scary and it isn't a porno disguised as a movie I'll give it a shot. And just an FYI, I am just getting home from Fast Five, easily the second best in the series so far!

Game-wise I play whatever isn't scary. And that's my only video game rule. Video games are pretty well self-policed sexually so there isn't much to worry about and almost every game has an option to turn any of the nudity it does have off. Mostly I just play sand boxes though.

Really when it comes to entertainment I kind of just want to be entertained. I don't take things literally. I'm just in it for a good laugh and some fun times with friends. I don't even watch movies without others around and I don't play games unless they have multiplayer.

:clap Well said!!!

Found another moment in Doctor Who that worked for my "ethical dilemma" discussion but it would take a while to explain. But I've still learned loads more from secular TV than Christians which I think is sad. Which is why I turn to the Bible.

If that's true, it is sad. :sad

Which is why I turn to the Bible.

This should be our first option; not a secondary one.

People will all eventually fail you. God won't, and His Word remains His Word. I'm all for the freedom to enjoy secular entertainment, but I would just caution you to be aware of how much meaning you're trying to get out of it and how much of yourself you invest in it. This could come to be a sort of idle.

We (the Church) are the bride of Christ, and Christ is the Bride-Groom. Our fulfillment should come from God.

Isaiah 55
1 “Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare."

We are in a Covenant the God, and we need to be fulfilled by Him. He needs to complete us. By seeking fulfillment outside of Him, we are saying He does not complete us, and we are seeking something else. It would be as if I were to tell my wife, "I'm not getting enough from you. I still love you, but you aren't filling my needs, so I'm also pursuing other relationships." Our fallen nature dictates that we will all do this if even a little. We selfishly look for other personal pleasures, but we need to avoid this as much as we can.

I'm just saying, try not to allow these things to take up space that God should have. :)

Sorry I worded that wrong. I read the Bible and then allow God to teach me through the media. I wouldn't learn anything the other way around.

My entertainment philosophy is stuff like this:

By the way, this prof does an excellent job in explaining the ontological argument.

pascal's wager

Oh, this stuff is just for entertainment purposes only..I love debating it with nonbelievers in hopes that I may plant a seed with the substance that all Christians know---"FAITH"

I am a history buff lately, I watch alot of movies with WWII themes, one of the most recent excellent movies I would recommend is "the reader" although some graphic sexual scenes the overall movie and message is excellent. I have found since my relationship with Christ I no longer am attracted to certain movies and I see gratuity (it that is the right word) all the time now, it is a blue moon if I spend money at an actual theatre, too much crap on screen these days.too much cussin, too much worry about getting sex, alot of movies are about teenage boys and middle age woman what do they have in common? yep getting sex.:biglol
