porn was around thousands of years ago
I realize that, but I guess what I would like to know is if you think it has exploded with the use of the internet?

After all, we have porn recovery groups in the church, it's an epidemic. I have a hard time believing it was this bad in the past.

probably.

human trafficking isn't new, it was know then just not paid attention to by the media. wherever there is whores for sale there will be children on sale too. korea comes to mind and the us soldier paying for services unbeknownst to him.
That's what I meant, actually. As an example of things existing in the past without our knowledge. I'm just saying, the past isn't as golden as we sometimes think it is.

Well, the past was NOT as great as we like to think it was.
And we ALL tend to measure everything based on the short time we are on this planet.

HOWEVER,
I am 54 years old and I do see the following:
  • The work ethic is in peril in the current generation (age up to maybe 30 or so).
  • The paradigm shift in parenting over the past 30 years has taken a horrible toll, the young (again, under 30) have a horrible lack of appreciation for what they do have. They are a generation that was never told 'no' and was constantly exposed to people saying that we had to "do it for the children" - I believe this has caused an inflated concept of that generation's importance in their own minds.
  • We live a much less polite, considerate, society. (I remember going into neighborhood bars with my dad - swearing was not allowed in any of them before 9pm, and kids weren't allowed after 9pm so that adults COULD be vulgar - that is no longer the case these days)

THEre is more, but Im' at the airport, I've eaten, time to ride the train/cab home..

There was discussion in the other thread that sexual temptations are the same from then until now. Look at these 2 ads and we can see how sexual promiscuity has increased with ads.

Here is a Jeep ad from the 1960's:

Hey!! lol
Yes, I would agree, we are the entitled age and the appreciation for work ethics is not good.

However, WHY did this generation end up this way? Did our parents teach us to respect others? Did they teach us to work for what we have? Did they teach us HOW to have good work ethics?

I don't think they did and wonder the why of it?

Personally, I think women's lib was not good for America, it 1). took away the role of mothers and fathers 2). kids had no and still don't have supervision after school 3). with a 2 person income, it drove prices up.

This is from my perception though.

Yes, it was just as bad in the past. (In the past kids snuck into their fathers collection of playboys when he wasn't watching, now they go to internet sites when he's not watching.) The difference now (and this IS an improvement) is that people are more open to talk about it (hence, the existence of recovery groups) and psychologists better understand the addiction part of it so they can be more effective at helping people.

Thing is...women's lib was really a reaction to economic circumstances. The ideas themselves had been floating around for a while, especially in intellectual circles. But...economic shifts meant more families needed 2 income earners. Also, the divorce rate started rising, so women needed to work, and a lot of them needed to earn more $$$, so equal pay became a bigger issue for women and children.

I am of the belief the divorce rates increased as a direct result of women's lib. Women assumed the role of men, it was beginning to turn upside down at this point, imo. The stress of being full time employed as well as the demands of taking care of the home and trying to look after the kids, I would imagine they were stressed and that is the way it is today.

I dont think these times are any worse than any times. What is in the world now always was. Its just technology that exposes more things.

I think some things are relevant. This is just an example. Like if a population 200 years ago was 100 and 1 person had a divorce, and now the population is 1000 and 10 people get divorced, it seems to look like more people are getting divorce yet nothing is worse.

Its easy to twist things. Guess what, 200 years ago the divorce rate was low. Only 1 person got divorced that year, this year over 10 people have got divorced, times are getting worse.

There are 7 billion people in the world now so im sure things are looking way worse than they ever were before, but nothing has really changed. Its just grown with the population.
I agree, we can't get accurate numbers without using percentages. So if we look at divorce rates this way, we can see that 50% of them end, here's a table showing divorce rates from 1950-2004:

I definitely think the respect for elders has gone out the door. Parents are not allowed to dicipline there kids physically. It is against the law here now to smack your child. I use to get the cord and a wooden spoon on my hand. That was painful. I learnt my lessons fast.

I was speaking to my friends grandaughter because she was getting bullied at school, boys throwing eggs at her on the bus and pulling her hair and being idiots.

Anyhow, she was telling me that they are allowed to sit in the classroom while the teacher is teaching and play on there iphones or whatever they are. She said the class just sit on there phones all day. How are they suppose to learn?. No wonder so many are dumb these days.

That is so disrespectful towards a teacher. So me and her grandmother thought we would show her what its like, every time she tried talking to us, me and grandma just ignored her and started talking with each other.
Did ignoring her work?

It probably depends on the school's rules on cell phone usage, at my hs, they were not allowed, and if a student was caught they had to go to detention on Saturday mornings. For the most part at my school they were at least respectful up front, especially football players, if you weren't you'd be punished by physical exercise. lol

Tons of drugs though.
