Revelation! 666 is not the number of the beast (it's a devilish 616)
By Tom Anderson

A newly discovered fragment of the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament indicates that, as far as the Antichrist goes, theologians, scholars, heavy metal groups, and television evangelists have got the wrong number. Instead of 666, it's actually the far less ominous 616.

The new fragment from the Book of Revelation, written in ancient Greek and dating from the late third century, is part of a hoard of previously unintelligible manuscripts discovered in historic dumps outside Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. Now a team of expert classicists, using new photographic techniques, are finally deciphering the original writing.

Professor David Parker, Professor of New Testament Textual Criticism and Paleography at the University of Birmingham, thinks that 616, although less memorable than 666, is the original. He said: "This is an example of gematria, where numbers are based on the numerical values of letters in people's names. Early Christians would use numbers to hide the identity of people who they were attacking: 616 refers to the Emperor Caligula."

The Book of Revelation is traditionally considered to be written by John, a disciple of Jesus; it identifies 666 as the mark of the Antichrist. In America, the fundamentalist Christian right often use the number in sermons about the coming Apocalypse.

They and satanists responded coolly to the new "Revelation". Peter Gilmore, High Priest of the Church of Satan, based in New York, said: "By using 666 we're using something that the Christians fear. Mind you, if they do switch to 616 being the number of the beast then we'll start using that."

Hi

I would hardly call a document from the third century, as proof 666 is wrong.

We have many writings of early saints that clearly use 666 and not 616.

It is my guess that the 666 was changed to 616 by those who wished to make it appear to be Nero or another Roman Emperor. And thus back up their doctrine of men.

The Gnostic were famous for altering scripture.................. what was found was found in a Gnostic dominated area very close to were the Nag Hammadi documents were found.

The Time frame also fits the time frame that their version of Christianity came under increasing attack from the Orthodox sects.

In fact by 325 AD all Gnostic writings were ordered burned by the council of Nicaea

By using 666 we're using something that the Christians fear.

Psa 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:

LOL..They are the ones who will be fearing the Lord.

God said 666 if they want to change it let them. :P

6 is the number of man becuase God created him on the 6th day.
Ancient Babylon's math system is based on a base 60. We base our system of math on a base 10. When king Nebbie raised a gold statue of himself to be worshipped is was "60" high and "6" wide. He was making a point that he was the whole measure of the statue revealed to him by Daniel in chp 2.
The circle is based on the same system: 360 degrees 6x60.
Time measurement is based on Babylonian math: 60 seconds, 60 minutes.
Surveyors measure out land in Babylonians standards of degrees, minutes, seconds.

You could say we meaure our world by Babylonian standards of space and time. Weird, huh?

We have over 24,000 copies of or portions of the New Testament in existence today. They back up the 666. I don't think we need to be concerned about this one at all. And of all the books in the Bible, there is a serious warning about tampering, adding, or taking from the book of Revelation. These people may find themselves the recipients of those plagues described within.

God has done a fine job of preserving His Word and this should not shake the foundation of any Christian.

And as for the satanists, they need to know that their number does not "scare" me in the least. They could use any number they wish and I would not be the least bit frightened of them or their demon god. The One I worship is all powerful and will destroy satan. I rest in His might and fear is therefore swept away.

Here is something that was pointed out to me this weekend; I will simplify what it said...

"666 is for confirming, not determining."

Makes sense to me. :-D
