My wife, not long ago, remarked how much she liked that product I used back in 1960s. It's been out of production for at least 42 years.
So I got to thinking. Maybe I could figure out what was in it. Lime, for sure. Ginger oil. Maybe musk. Sweet orange. And a floral thing I didn't really know.
I mixed a base of 2/3 everclear, 1/3 witch hazel. Added a tablespoon of glycerin for an emollient, and a pinch of alum for styptic. This is apparently the usual mix for a lot of aftershave formulas, and it seemed right. Added the oils, shook it well, and left it for a day.
Not too bad. But then I added a very, very small amount of frangipani.
I gave Mrs. B. a hug today, after using it, and I got a huge smile. "Where did you find Hawaiian Surf?"
Then, I knew I had it.
