This night the moon was shining a faint red color. And if there are stars or the moon out usually you can tell the boundaries of clouds as well. Only on nights that are completely overcast is what you've said true that you can not tell because there's no light to show the edges of the clouds. Last night was not like that where it was overcast, and I haven't moved to another location that I'm not use to which stars can be seen and which can't be. It was distinctly different from other nights. But as I said before, thinking about it it was probably because of the smoke from fireworks the night before.
Either way there is reason for these kinds of observations. Isaiah 13, Mathew 24, Luke 21, Joel 2, and Revelations 6 all have a passage in them that tells about the Day of the Lord. The Day of Judgment, or the end times tribulations. These passages talk about the sun moon and stars being darkened or to show no light. With Revelation 6 and Joel 2 adding that the moon will be blood red. So yes on any other day the stars don't go away, they are just covered by the clouds or obscured in some other way, but some day they will not shine any light and that is a sign to watch for.
