When my wife and I moved to Connecticut 30 years ago, no black bears had been seen in the state for 60 years. Over the last 15 years black bears have moved into areas throughout the state, including the rural/suburb where we live. I've seen these critters more or less frequently over the last few years, including a time when a large adult bear came to the bottom of the ladder I was on as I was painting the house. It wandered away after awhile, not seeming to have known or cared that I was on the ladder, all the while my yellow lab was barking her head off. Black bears are not aggressive and pose no real danger unless cornered, or with cubs. This morning an adult mama bear with three cubs killed a dog in a neighbors yard, less than quarter of a mile away.

Looks like I'll have to take down the birdfeeders for the summer and watch the dog a whole lot more closely. The bears were dragging down the birdfeeders fairly routinely anyway.

Wow, when I left there 30 yrs. ago I hadn't ever heard of a bear in CT. I hope people are keeping a close eye on their little ones. I can just see a little kid wanting to check out a cub, their so cute.

we have these black bears out west...

We have them around here but I have not seen one yet.The people who lived here before me saw one.I saw a bob cat the other day.

We get a visit from this old girl and her cubs pretty regularly. Here are some shots of her across the road from us, she was in our front yard earlier.

You do not want to get inbetween a mother bear and her cubs hince the saying "like a mother bear".

I'm pretty sure that's why the dog mentioned in the OP was killed.
