Thanks to the illusions presented by some in the media, yes, it would appear as though American Christianity has been hijacked.

However, it's just an illusion.

Many of the Christian churches in America still teach about the love - agape love - that we are to show our neighbors (i.e., everyone), and promote the steps we are to take in this life as Christians.

Unfortunately, some in the media only want to emphasize what they think will be profitable for their businesses.

I think a lot of it is perception, people will remember the bad done so much easier than they will remember the good. I don't think any movement has ever existed that people speak nothing but good about. I imagine during the church's early years of persecution in Rome there was a lot of negativity going around about it to justify the persecution.
I agree with this, though:

To paraphrase a delegate at a recent church convention that hotly debated the allowance of openly LGBT pastors, "Why isn't our church this passionate about poverty?"
Why aren't we known as the faith that seeks to feed the hungry, shelter the needy, and comfort the sick?

Though, I will say that those ministries and churches that DO feed the hungry, shelter the needy, and comfort the sick, or who have a part in that, seem to be overlooked by the world at large most of the time. It's not as rare as people seem to think.

Personally, I am turned off by churches that put a huge emphasis on LGBT issues over other sins or place higher importance on it than on other areas.

Because there are many non Christians that choose to see it that way, not because it's true but because it fits their agenda to make the church the bad guy in their mind....common tactics.

Then there is this so, It may be a little of both:

Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

The church represents Jesus so they will catch the flack for teaching what Jesus said won't "send peace" and they always have.

It's going to get worse as we draw towards the end..... much worse.

i agree { Because there are many non Christians that choose to see it that way } we are seeing apostasy unfolding before are very eyes. while i do hold to the assurance of my salvation.. i question all these get on board same sex marriage etc and every other thing that floats down stream .i have doubts of them being a part of the true body of Christ

Jesus is building His church ... Some time the hammers, saws, nails , etc of building hurt... Some times temporary braces are use then removed ... I trust the Lord to know what He is doing.. He the man grew up as a carpenter that metaphor was no accident...
