Compassion is important. When we are victimised and people listen to our story and express empathy or sympathy, it helps.
But in our modern world, compassion has become weaponised . Used to take advantage of those with money who suffer guilt for their wealth. There is an opportunist mentality that sniffs a chance to manipulate .
But we should always maintain a compassionate heart. So the trick is to
blend out compassion with pragmatism. You aren't here to please people. You are here to help people.

Some people don't want sympathy, they just want someone who will listen and who they can trust.

I agree with both of you, because empathy and listening are both important.
As for the money part that is not how we should look at people, we look at the person not their wealth.

Suffering and being victimised are not the same.
There may be someone or an organisation who is responsible for suffering but it is not always the case.

Even when someone has been victimised there are reason why it is not possible to claim compensation, particularly if one's victimisation is because one stands against a current fad.
