Trusting God

"In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one" (Eph. 6:16).

Intense spiritual warfare calls for intense trust in God.

An on-duty Roman soldier was always dressed for battle but didn't employ his shield, helmet, and sword until the fighting started. But we as Christians must be ready for battle at all times because our enemy is relentless. We can't afford to overlook a single piece of armor or slip into complacency or neglect.

In that regard, Ephesians 6:16 says in effect, "Now that you've prepared for battle by girding your loins with truth, protecting your vital organs with the breastplate of righteousness, and securing your feet with the gospel of peace, don't forget to take up your shield."

Two types of shields were commonly used by Roman soldiers. One was a small, lightweight, round shield that was strapped to the soldier's left forearm and used to parry blows during hand-to-hand combat. The other, which Paul refers to here, was a large shield measuring about four-and- a-half-feet high and two-and-a-half-feet wide. It was made of sturdy wood covered with metal and a thick layer of oil- treated leather. The metal deflected arrows while the oily leather extinguished the fiery pitch that arrows were commonly swabbed with. That type of shield was ideal for full-body protection.

In the initial stages of a battle, the front-line soldiers knelt behind their large shields to protect themselves and provide a defense barrier for the troops behind them who were firing offensive weapons. The goal was to inch their way forward as a human wall until they could engage the enemy in hand-to-hand combat.

As a believer, the shield that protects you is your faith in God. If you never question His character, power, or Word, you'll never fall victim to Satan's attacks. That doesn't mean he won't beseige you—but when he does, his assaults will be ineffective.

Suggestions for Prayer

Faith is a precious gift from God (Phil. 1:29). Thank Him for it and ask for wisdom to apply it properly when spiritual struggles come (James 1:5).

For Further Study

Read Romans 8:31-39.
  • Meditate on the victory you have in Christ.
  • What effect should that have on your daily living?

From Drawing Near by John MacArthur

we as Christians must be ready for battle at all times

I find it strange that everyone who quotes these verses automatically assumes that Christians know how to wear the armour, tie the .aces of the sandles, hl.d and use a sword, as well as how to use a shield.

Soldiers are Trained taught how to manager, how to fight etc etc etc.
HOW do you suggest Christians are trained and taught.?

That's what discipleship is about, it takes time. Anyone who thinks the Christian life is an ocean cruise vacation is deluded. We are to get ready for spiritual and mental warfare, lest Satan devour us to make us lose faith.
1 Pet. 1:13 "Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

The answers have been given in these devotions.

Knowing ans understanding the Bible is key.

Many believe the Christian life is a life of ease.

The fact is, it is extremely hard at times, we are not walking through a rose field.

Many come to Christ for selfish personal gains and the Lord know this turns Himself away from them.

John 2:23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, when they saw His signs which He was doing.
John 2:24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men,

Being a Christian is a whole-hearted commitment of one's life.

Matthew 10:37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Matthew 16:25 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
Matthew 16:26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Looking back at my life almost 50 years ago when I was converted, I lacked all of these qualities. I was not committed, I did not love God, I did not deny myself, I was not about losing my life, and I was about gaining pleasure and profit. I was in the Christian life solely to escape lake-of-fire judgment, while maintaining some semblance of social order. It took about 15 years of trying to live right, with trials and many failings, until I finally was able to embrace the fact that God loves me personally, and that His grace was given to me as an individual. Although my faith even at that time was little to be seen, my spiritual growth as a Christian was mainly slow and steady, with some psychological breakthroughs along the way.

I've had a fairly difficult time walking the Christian life, and I can see times when I thought it was impossible. In my Bible teaching ministry in prisons, I heard that more than one person said that my version of Christianity was impossible. I suppose it is because they were where I was 20 years earlier. I'm glad that I made a commitment to follow the proverb "in all your getting, get understanding."

Thank you for your honesty.

We need to count the cost of following Christ, it is not an easy life, but it is a life of abundance, joy and contentmet when we are doing it His way. Pays off when we get home.

Luk 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
Luk 14:27 “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Luk 14:28 “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
Luk 14:29 “Lest, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,
Luk 14:30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
Luk 14:31 “Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
Luk 14:32 “Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
Luk 14:33 “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

Knowing ans understanding the Bible is key.

So on becoming a Christian one gets a transfer of biblical knowledge and Christian practices without realising it.

Get real, everyone learns by studying the bible and listening to good biblical expository preaching.

In otherworld they are trained/taught.

Whoever said that?

How did you get that out of my comment?

My response was about the need for Christians to be trained.

You responded implying it was dealt with in your post and saying biblical knowledge was needed.
( there is nothing in the first post about training. )

So I gave a sarcastic reply about telepathic teaching and about practical Christian learning.

I am confused.

The whole point of any devotion, well many anyhow, is to learn and understand Scripture.

The author exegetes the verse and teaches what it means for Christians to apply.

I would consider that training.

We all have an opinion.

Grace and peace to you.

Don't be confused, loo, around this forum and others at the numbers of really confused Christians who need sound explicit teaching and are not getting it.
I was confused by your words.

You did clarify.

I understand what you are saying about those who are confused on this forum.

As in the world, the many who claim to be saved are really self-deceived.

Matthew 7:21Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS
