Do Christians have itching ears wanting to hear and believe what they want? Why does this occur?

Yes, most of us do. That's why we are washing down many Jesus' teachings.

.

To say "No" would be denying what the Bible teaches:

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;

It means we go and listen to those who preaches a gospel that suit us. These gospels are designed to keep our flesh alive and they do not take us to our cross. These gospels allow us to defend ourselves, they prevent us from turning the other cheek, they make us eternally secure, they allow us to stay in sin and just keep on asking forgive, forgive , forgive. These gospels take us away from only trusting in God and His Word, they allow us to use the "arm of the flesh" as well.

You will see that most are very well versed in these, but few stick to the Word only.
