Bible Study Eradication of the Adamic (Sinful) Nature?

Due to the relevancy of the doctrine of indwelling sin within the believer, I thought this share-worthy.

In our zeal to please God we can unknowingly, due to possessing less Scriptural-comprehension than we realize, accept doctrine before confirming Scriptural support; which can result in nothing more than conjecture.

Concerning the eradication of the sin nature (“old manâ€) during regeneration (born again), it conflicts with a multitude of scriptural doctrine, esp. with Galatians 5:17: "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish."

To me, this is a description of the Adamic nature (old man) and the Holy Spirit co-existing (not cohabitation) within the believer and I think it would be quite an ingenious invention for anyone to explain it otherwise.

There remains also the lack of an explanation for the phrase "so that you do not do the things that you wish;" which implies the ongoing tendency for the believer to do wrong, evincing the presence of the sin nature. I also believe Scripture would be more clear in identifying it's death in like manner as it has concerning our death in Christ, i.e., "For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Col 3:3).

Hi Enlightened - You can barely see daylight between our differences here. If you're referring to the physical body as "flesh," there is a conflict with this concerning, "All things indeed are pure" (Rom 14:20). Though this passage in reference to the eating of foods, it is also a truism concerning the fact that material objects (things) cannot be impure, having no soul or nature.

This means the physical body itself is not impure, being a "thing"; it is the carnal part of our nature which is part of our spirit being, which is impure. The Spirit through the "new man" or nature within us, controls us more than does the old man; "strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man" (new man--Eph 3:16).

The corrupt desires of the flesh and the authority it had over us is our 'old man'. The authority of the flesh to hold us in the bondage of the old man and what he thinks and does has been broken. We are to now bring ourselves under the authority of the Spirit who makes us a new man, a new creation in Christ in bondage to righteousness.

Hi Enlightened - I just wanted to share with you that there is no Scripture reference for the death of our sin nature, but rather its restraint (Rom 6:12, 14). The only parts of sin that are "destroyed" in its crucifixion (Rom 6:6) are the damning power and ruling influence, but not its presence.

We have died to sin (Rom 6:2) but it is not dead to us. If it were, the Spirit would not need to oppose it in us (Gal 5:17) and Paul wouldn't be describing its internal conflict in the believer (Rom 7:14-25).

Our spiritual growth progresses when we realize the continued need of the Cross of Christ and its restraining element to our "old man," and at the same time knowing our unchanging position (Rom 11:29 NKJV) as being "accepted in the Beloved" (Eph 1:6).

If you mean death of the physical body, I agree.

Physical death is when we enter fully into the rest from the task master of fallen flesh that we have received in Christ.
