Hi again Joe. There has been, over the last Century, a huge amount of charismatic confusion about the Holy Spirit. Confusion about the subject of the baptism, and His gifts. I am a teacher of Scripture, not Denominational in practices and doctrine. Having said that, I hope I can shed some light on your question. The words in & of are extremely important in understanding many Scriptural matters. We will look at several portions of Scripture to explain my theology on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
First, we must understand that there are three Baptism's. One, water Baptism. Two, the Holy Spirit's Baptism into the family of God. Three, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit after Salvation.
Water Baptism: Act 2:38a "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins," This obviously is "water Baptism." It resembles identifying with Messiah Yahshua's death, burial, and resurrection to new life. It is also a public profession of believing by faith in the Messiah, or Savior. Being immersed in water is also a spiritual symbol of the washing away of sin in the individual's life.
Acts 2:38b "and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." The "gift" is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which is said to baptize us into the family of God." The first "indwelling of the Holy Spirit came in John 20:21&22.
John 20:21 "Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you." Here, we must pay particular attention to the words of Jesus, "as the Father hath
sent Me, even so
send I you." IMO, Jesus is saying, I came to save sinners from their sins, and and now that I'm no longer going to stay here on earth, you are going to take My place. Now, the Disciples have a major problem. They always had Jesus to help them when it came to healing certain people, to cast out some demons etc. etc. The power that they relied on was Jesus' and He is going back to the Father. They need power to witness, heal, cast of devils, and so on.
Jesus' remedy: John 20:22 "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost." Just like in the beginning, God breathed life into the lifeless body of Adam, Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit life into those disciples. From then on, all who profess by faith in Messiah Yahshua (Jesus) His death, burial, and resurrection for the remission of sins and a new life (creation) will be indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
Now we come to the third Baptism. Act 1:4 "And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. Act 1:5 For John truly baptized
with water; but ye shall be baptized
with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." The words "ye shall be baptized
with the Holy Spirit" is where there is what I call "Charismatic confusion." They say, be baptized
with the Holy Spirit or baptism
of the Holy Spirit, when to be biblical and true to the meaning of this statement it should say, be baptized
in the Holy Spirit.
Also, to stay biblical, John the Baptist
immersed the people who came to him at the Jordan River. This mistake in this one word,
with, is the reason so many religions just sprinkle their people instead of complete immersion. Stay with this thinking now. Baptized IN water, Baptized IN the Holy Spirit. The word "IN" is the Greek word ἐν which means “in”. Anyone can look up this word in "Strongs". So the verses that say "with" or "of" should rather say "in".
Now lets look at the WHY. Again, look at Acts 1:8. The reason for the Holy Spirit being IN us is so we can experience Holy Spirit POWER, because He is the power source of Almighty God. And the reason for the Holy Spirit power in us is to be witnesses to the world, starting in our local area, then spreading out from there. So many people wonder why they don't see much success in their witness, healing folk, or dealing with the satanic world, this is why!
When I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, I was a little rebellious about what my Lord wanted me to do in the future. At the moment of saying, "I surrender my life to You right now, I'll do what You want me to do. My baptism was very dramatic, for four days, I went from crying to laughter, for four days! I had to stay indoor so people wouldn't think I was nuts. Actually I was nuts, nuts over my Lord. Ever since that day in 1990 (I think) There is a new communication link from God to me, and power from God to do His work. Many, came to Christ when I preached the Gospel, and healing happened with those the Lord pointed out. To this day, I'm different than I was before 1990. No, it wasn't Salvation, I was born again in 1974, also with a dramatic conversion, I must have been a rascal.
Well, this has been long, and I hope it helps you gain a new perspective into what God expects from a searching heart for the Truth....Be blessed my special friend and Brother.
If you have any questions, I'll try and be brief this time.
