I assume most Christian understand here that Luke is tracing Yeshua's biological ancestry through Mary. Joseph's name in the genealogy in the Greek text is not treated like the others, it treats it like something shoehorned in. This is how he avoids the Curse on the line of Jechoniah.

But most people don't think there is anything i the old Testament to imply the Messiah could come from David's son Nathan, they think this was a completely New Testament surprise. However, Zechariah 12:12, which is definitely Messianic says.
And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;
The following verse mentions Levi, Mary possibly also had Aaronic descent, via her being a Cousin of Elizabeth.

Some critics of the NT insist on arguing the Messiah can only come from Solomon, that the curse of Jechoniah doesn't invalided the entire Royal line, not even all Josiah's descendents. What they forget is Jechoniah was only the final straw, Solomon forfeited his potential Messianic inheritance. 1 Kings 11 starting in verse 11
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant. Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son. Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.
The Messiah is destined to rule all of Israel, yet because of Solomon's failure his line was allowed only Judah, and perhaps portions of other tribes living with Judah. But they would not be allowed to rule the North. Galilee where Yeshua grew up and spent most of his Ministry, and Samaria where not allowed for Solomon's descendents.
