One of the most beautifully written books I have ever had the honor to read.
An old preacher in a small Iowa town (Gilead) marries late in life, and has a son. He finds out when the boy is seven that he has a degenerative heart disease and won't live more than a year.
The book is a compilation of diary entries he makes for his son to read after he has passed on.
I don't often cry when reading a book, but the ending was so moving I was crying my eyes out.
If you don't think modern fiction can capture a Christian perspective, and the Christian history of the hardscrabble Midwest, this is a must read.
Amazing book.
