I'm glad you're posting this. I really don't think most Christians today understand what spirit means in this context. But I'm glad you referenced back to the Shema which is basically the statement of faith for Judaism based on Deuteronomy 6:4. And the reason this is so important, IMO, is because Yeshua and his disciples weren't Christians. They were Jews and so their bible was the TNK (TeNaKh/OT) and so that was their foundation. They could have a new interpretation but they couldn't outright contradict any more than a Christian could do with the NT.

The important thing about the Shema is that the children of Israel were supposed to repeat this 3 times a day. Why would they need to repeat something that wasn't important or that they themselves weren't giving the correct interpretation/understanding of? That would make zero sense. So for others to come along, without even trying to use the OT as a foundation, and declare that all the Jews are wrong according to their new interpretations of the NT... it just doesn't make sense. 3 Times a day they were to repeat this one singular idea; that YHWH was their elohim (God) and God was one.

Trinitarians will claim that this doesn't mean one in the literal sense and that the Hebrew word Elohim is plural. However, Elohim CAN be plural in at least 2 different ways. It CAN be plural in quantity. But it can also be plural in quality. And Elohim isn't the only Hebrew word translated to God. The singular root El is also translated to God (as in El Shaddai).

When the disciples in the NT (or any other writer) says "God is a (singular) spirit" they are reinforcing their belief in the Shema. This is not a third being who is some kind of ghostly form. God is a spirit. In fact, since God is also holy we can clearly see that God IS the "holy spirit". This is most often taken as being that third person "of the godhead" when actually the bible talks about 3 forms this one spirit of God can be expressed in: IN you, Above you, and Through you.
