Google Chrome question

Hello all you tech people who actually know what you are doing on a computer :) I have a question.I have an older computer and I am using internet explorer as my browser.I often get a message on my computer telling me that I am using an old browser and that I should install Google Chrome.I have Avast for my virus protection which I like alot.Avast told me once that Google Chrome can be a problem.What do you think?
 
I don't know why you are seeing that message. I would not click any links from it. Have you verified you are using the latest version of IE?

With regard to Chrome I use it all the time. I prefer it over IE and FF.

I am alittle slow here when it comes to computers.
1) I do not know why I am getting that message either.
2) How do I verify that I am using the lastest version of IE?How will I know?
3) If I use Google Chrome will it mess up my favorites?

When i need an answer i want a list a plain list...
step by step... no off shoots don tell me it can be done a different way also...

Yes I am the same way
1) Put your fingers on the keyboard
2) Push the button the the big tower box.The button that lights up.
3) Then push the button on the lower right of the screen in front of you.It will turn green and you will see a picture on it.

I would ignore those messages. If you're not having any problems with your browser, why change? If you want to change browsers, go directly to the source. Those messages you're getting are from people who just want to download a bunch of junk onto your computer. They'll give you Google Chrome, which is free to anyone who wants it, but you run the risk of having tracking devices installed on your computer. Like I said, if you want Chrome, go get it from Google.

Another thing to think about is your virus protection. If Avast said there could be a problem, I would listen to them. Maybe there's something in Chrome that Avast isn't able to protect. Compatibility issues. I don't know.



Rule of Thumb: Pop-ups are bad.

Thanks Gary.I learned a long hard lesson once not to click on those messages.

If you have an older computer, I would stick with the browser you started with. Your system may not be fully compatible with a different browser.

If it ain't broke...

Are they popping up on certain websites? Some sites do that because they work better in newer browsers. Some sites won't work at all in older browsers, and will give you a message telling you to upgrade.

  1. Double-click on the "blue E" to open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on Help in the menu bar (if there is no menu bar, then pres ALT on your keyboard, then click on Help)
  3. Click on About Internet Explorer
  4. The newest version is version 11.

If I'm not mistaken, Chrome will use the same favorites you have in Explorer.

When you install Chrome, you can import your favorites from your IE browser. I agree that the best place to get Chrome if you want to try it is to get it directly from Google Chrome. It is free and takes only a few seconds to install.

To verify the version of IE just click on the "Help" tab and then click on "About Internet Explorer."

You should see the version as shown below.

As you can see in my screen shot, I have IE10 on this computer at work. The highest revision is IE11. I think IE10 is the highest you can go unless you have Windows7 or higher operating system but I am not absolutely sure. I do have Windows7 on this computer but our IT group hasn't upgraded my IE yet. If you try to install it, Windows will verify that your OS is compatible first so there's no concern.

You can upgrade at no cost from Microsoft. If you do decide to upgrade get it directly from Microsoft. It is safer that way.
 
Unless I am having major problems with my computer I think I will go with what Gary said "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

That's probably a good idea. I wish the sysadmins at work would follow that rule more often.

I used Chrome for quite some time until I started getting those pesky popups. I decided not to use Chrome and went back to IE. That ended those popups.

For this Forum, I use Fire Fox. I do get popups, but not for a different browser.

You are not the only one who has told me that Chopper.Maybe that is why my virus protector Avast has said they are a problem.
 
Chrome and FF both have the ability to block pop-ups. Perhaps you don't have it configured correctly?

Unless I am having major problems with my computer I think I will go with what Gary said "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

There's nothing wrong with that idea. The main reason I switched to Chrome was speed. It is about twice as fast as IE and faster than FF too. I've used all three. Never tried Opera.

edit: by the way, I'm speaking about my desktop computer. I found I didn't like Chrome on my Android so I don't use it on my smart phone.

I am of the mindset that if there is a better product, then go for it.

But if Kathi's virus protection has an issue with Chrome, perhaps staying away from Chrome would be best. Perhaps a move to FireFox?
