I don't know, he has never stated a reason, just that it's a personal preference.
I do know he's quite busy most of the time and CF is just one piece.

My guess is that he wants the actual running of the community to be done by people who are active and know the community well. And so if he can't fully commit to that side of it, then he won't do it at all, but rather simply organises hosting, domain names, finances etc.

I believe the administrators keep him informed of anything he needs to know about that he hasn't seen for himself. There was an incident a short while back that needed his attention and even though he was on vacation at the time, he was quickly contacted and just as quickly gave his instructions and approval of how it should be handled.

By the way, I've been on other web sites too where the owner never participates in the conversations on the site itself. This isn't the only one by any means.

The best word I can use to describe our conversation is "intrigue".

He bought the forum from Logan, now Logan was a hands on owner, he was mostly on the board almost everyday, but he gave Judy and Vic who are also no longer with this board full power to run it. So Greg has done the same thing with his admins, he let's them run this place, which is cool with me. I do miss Logan, Judy and Vic though, because they interacted a lot. So if Greg is a busy guy that's cool too.

Hey Nick, I miss you as a admin too, and I really mean that. you became one very young which says a lot about you, I love you man.

I worked with Greg on an almost daily basis when I cut over this site from VB to its current xenforo software and when we moved the site between hosting companies.

He's a good man and learned a lot, and knows how to listen. Thankfully he receives enough in donations to support the cost of this site without adding advertising.
