A chain of events culminated one night to provide me with the means to defend myself from an intruder who has remained unknown along with their intentions. My grandfather had died and my grandmother had decided to leave me his 20 gauge shotgun that he used for duck hunting. Both my older brother and brother-in-law had wanted it and thought it should have been left to them. I was actually surprised that it was left to me at all. My mother was spending more and more time at the church so she could be with her Episcopal Priest married boyfriend. She would leave the home for hours each evening and stay at the church until 10 or 11 o'clock at night. One night I felt uneasy so I turned on all the lights and locked up the doors as best I could.(bad neighborhood...doors had been kicked in). I was in my mid-teens and wanted nothing to do with that church. After locking up, I retired to my room and closed my door to watch TV. I didn't normally close my door but ,like I said, I felt uneasy. I heard some noise at the front door like someone had come in. I didn't hear my mother's voice nor my little brother's. I turned down the TV some so I could hear better and went to the closet to get the shotgun. I quietly slipped a couple of shells in and waited. I could see light under my door from the hallway but then saw a shadow...like two feet. Sure looked like someone was standing on the other side of my door. I looked at my door knob and saw it start slowly turning open. I said "I have a gun and I'll shoot if you open that door"......using curse words. The door knob stopped a sec then continued opening. I rammed home a shell ...took aim...and said..."go ahead" ...the doorknob froze then turned back. The shadows disappeared. I heard the front door close. I stayed frozen in my room until finally my mother showed up. I told her what happened. She didn't seem surprised and didn't seem to care. One thing for sure ...whoever opened that door had a key...it was dead-bolted. If I hadn't been left that shotgun.....I just don't know. I'll never know for sure who that was...but I have my suspicions after all these decades. I thank the Lord He gave me the means to defend myself.
