How do three people share a game with separate accounts on the same computer. I'm preparing a unit for three youngsters and mother wants them on their own desktops. I know all Linux games appear in Games but Windows Games, installed in CrossOver or in Wine do not swap from desktop to desktop. I hope spome of you know how to fix because I seem to only be able to install in the Admin desktop.

The unit is Ubuntu 14.04 Unity. Black Phenom quad core, 3 gig RAM

user accounts/system settings and you can create different accounts in Ubuntu. You did not specify what game though. 3 gigs of ram, I assume it's a simple type learning game for kids.

Being a big gamer even today, a few years back games would ask if you wanted to install for All users, or just Admin for windows. Now, modern games just install as having access to a game is not considered a security threat, so all accounts have access to it.

For admin only the shortcut is places in the Start Menu, for all uses it's placed in Start/all users in windows you can just move the shortcut.

Whatever the case, the game needs to have it programmed in the install to select different accounts to write the registry keys.

If you have several accounts on windows for example, you can right click on the .exe and then the security tab then flag permissions for each account as an Admin. This will allow only certain accounts access to the program.

Ubuntu:
Where the game folder is, there should be some right click option, then an option to share contents in that folder with other accounts. These are for programs that install without root in Ubuntu. If the game installs without root, it's only available under the account in which it was installed. Games installed from the Software center should be available for all users.

Right clicking on the folder the game was installed/ properties should give you options to share the contents with other groups.

Why not just windows?

Blessings.

Good morning Mike,
Thanks for taking a stab and furnishing some thoughts on this. As usual, and me a practicing nerd, I did not supply enough data.

I am installing windows games using either Wine or Crossover. I have, since, checked the FAQs and do not like what I found. I believe I'm going to use a bit more space, 82 meg for the largest, and install for each user in their home directory. Yes, these are puzzle games that teach the young and keep old fossils like me sharpened up, sensory wise. They do require Admin. pword to install but they are old, out dated games that sold for ten to twenty so I think I'll burn copies and provide mom, the admin, with copies in case of meddling hands learn to quickly and kill a system with a command because they learned mom's pword.

Well, that is what I understand. Games that don't install in root by themselves would need installed separate in each profile. You still should be able to right click on the folder the game installed in and give each account access. I am not sure if this is just read or write access though.
A phenom quad core though can do a lot if you gave it a bit more memory, and a decent graphic card.

10-4! I gave it one of my formed digital or analog Radeon cards but I dont have a two gig ddr2 and wish I had a four to go with the two I originally installed for the customer that donated it back to me for this purpose. I change the permissions and gave everyone Read and Write but it is to hard for beginners to deal with and I don't want to scare them into windoze.

Well, Glad you got it sorted out. As cool as Ubuntu is, and runs about anything. I have stuck with Windows. Better the devil you know I guess.

If you did install windows 7 though. You would also need to buy some more memory. Windows is a system hog. My son is running with 4 gig, two ddr2 sticks. I just replaced them at 79.00 bucks for two. Seemed kind of expensive for Old memory I ordered from Newegg.

My wife I just built a computer with AMD 6x core at 3.5 ghz per core and a monster video card. The video card cost more than the CPU and Motherboard combined. My wife can now play Solitaire with Graphics turned all the way up, and no slow down. :)

Blessings Brother, glad that you got it sorted.

I still do not believe it but I have heard that because I have two units, one came with 7 and the other 8, that I will be given 10 free. I've also heard that 10 is going Open Source allowing folks around the world to legally rewrite the kernel. As I said, when I see, then I will believe.

With Android, and other OS out there that is free, Microsoft has been surviving on game sales and other things than their flagship windows. Windows 8 is horrible, using it right now and I have it set up like windows 7 anyway. Who wants to touch their nice monitor and constantly lift their hands up in the air to swap apps? The mouse is so much faster and uses far less energy.

I am not sure about open source. Right now Apple and Android seem neck to neck. Android is open source, Apple is not. Microsoft is making things for Android. If Apple can keep up (I hope it don't) as a closed OS, then why would Microsoft go open source with windows? Microsoft also said pirates will be allowed to upgrade, but their license status won't change. Nobody is sure how that is going to work, or if Microsoft is going for everyone having the same platform.

We will see.

LOL! They have figured a way to map the location of the pirates! LOL!
