how much reason do we have to take genesis literal....

If you choose not the believe Genesis you have to be careful what you throw out. If there was not a fall of mankind in the garden then there is no need for a redeemer. With no need for a redeemer then why did Jesus come?

It has to have truth because God does not lie.
 
Genesis is a big book. Your OP question is hard to answer.

I do not spend a lot of time on what was literal and what wasn't - I spend my time on what the over all message is:

God is in charge, He created all and wanted fellowship with us.
He is long suffering and has put up with a lot from us - but loves unconditionally (ok, the unconditional love seems to have taken on a life of it's own when Jesus died, but still).
