"Deferred Success" is new term for failure -report

In 2005, some people wanted the word "brainstorming" replaced by "thought shower" so as not to offend people with brain disorders, and they also wanted "deferred success" to replace "failure" so as not to embarrass those who don't succeed.

lol
I find some of this stuff amusing :)

From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politically_correct

The elderly became senior citizens
Foreign students became international students.
heart attack became a cardiovascular event
Department of Prisons became the Department of Corrections
War Department, together with the Navy Department became the Defense Department
Civilian deaths became collateral damage
Juvenile delinquents became troubled youth or children at risk
Affirmative action is used to describe preferences based on race, ethnicity and sex.
Illegal alien became illegal immigrant. More recently the term undocumented immigrant is used.

...in a satirical example of so-called political correctness speech, the sentence "The fireman put a ladder up against the tree, climbed it, and rescued the cat" might look like this:

The firefighter (who happened to be male, but could just as easily have been female) abridged the rights of the cat to determine for itself where it wanted to walk, climb, or rest, and inflicted his own value judgements in determining that it needed to be 'rescued' from its chosen perch. In callous disregard for the well-being of the environment, and this one tree in particular, he thrust the mobility-disadvantaged unfriendly means of ascent known as a 'ladder' carelessly up against the tree, marring its bark, and unfeelingly climbed it, unconcerned how his display of physical prowess might injure the self-esteem of those differently-abled. He kidnapped and unjustly restrained the innocent feline with the intention of returning it to the person who claimed to 'own' the naturally free animal.

political correctness needs to be stabbed in the face. just like gun control, it's a stupid issue that the left just can't let go of. maybe once all the aging hippies have died out, we'll be able to close this stupid pandora's box.

I was a hippie at one time. Had long hair up until 35 or so wanting to "identify" with something. Especially rebellion.

Anyway, another phrase that's popular, maybe not PC but heard a lot is .. "At this point in time." instead of "now". another is "as well" instead of "too" or "also". I counted 6 times that the weatherman... I mean weatherperson... used "as well" during the short minutes of the weather presentation.

I think the first one I heard long ago was "sanitation engineer" for garbageman. Couldn't be garbageperson though I suppose since the word "garbage" didn't fit well with the "feel good" establishment. And of course there's the more recent "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". And about a year ago I heard that "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day" might be changed to "Parent's day", one day a year instead of two, to appease the homosexual crowd but that one never caught on.

I wonder if we can refer to non-believers as "spiritually-challenged"? To be fair maybe believers can be labelled as "worldly-disabled" or some such thing.

And by the way,
The attempt to close a Pandora's Box has usually been met with "deferred success". In this case I don't think the world is ready to abandon the "feel good - don't offend" agenda any time soon.

Problem is you can't please everyone all the time so it'll be interesting to see how far this will go before people can't remember how to say something.

This doesn't sound so "feel-good; don't-offend" to me. I mean, honestly, it sounds like the death of person is being compared to, in importance, as totalled (sp?) car. It's as if the end of a human being's life doesn't even matter! :x

Political correctness is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. It's one thing to not be rude, but quite another to sound like a total idiot. Being politically correct (almost an oxymoron in itself) really leaves little room for common sense and individuality. If everything has to be referred to in the most general of terms, (not to mention that those terms must sound highly important, so as to make a person feel warm and fuzzy inside) then no one will really understand the aspects of job, event, culture, ect. It's ridiculous!

Live on politically incorrectedness! :-D

This one goes somewhat like "nuclear bomb" being termed as a "device". At first it began with "nuclear device" but was truncated later as simply a "device". And many don't want the horrors of war, disease or calamity to "violate" their little bubble of security or breach the walls of their comfort zones. Especially in the media. Remember, the newscaster must be able to smile most of the time. It just sells better I guess.
