What makes you think Adam was here before plants & animals? Man was created on the 6th day, after everything else was done.
 
Even if we were alive before man was created in body (He knew us before the foundation of the world), Adam wasn't alive as a man yet.

Gen 1:29 (RSV) And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.

I just jumped to conclusions and didn't read before posting. Well not really conclusions i was to lazy to study and read one chapter. I do that sometimes, post before thinking or reading.

God gave springs of water for the shrubs first so Adam had food. The beginning of genesis two.

There are two creation stories. The first begins at Gen 1:1 and goes to 2:3. In that story, God is called "Elohiym."
At Gen. 2:4 the second account begins and God is now called "Yahweh Elohiym."

In the first story (which is actually a genealogy of the heavens and earth) when God created man He gave man veggies to eat. (Gen 1:29) So, they must have been there in time for man to get hungry.

Also, do not assume that the creation accounts are chronologically organized. The are theologically organized. Genesis isn't the transcript of the video tape. It's the beginning of God's self revelation.
