Why is that people seem so surprise that the alleged killer in Colorado is a brilliant young man and does not fit the profile of a killer. These statements sound like a real joke to me. A killer does not have to be uneducated to be a killer and on the other hand a killer can almost certainly be a brilliant person. A killer does not look a certain way. Perhaps the more intelligent, the more dangerous they could be. Theodore John "Ted" Kaczynski was the Unabomber. He was a Harvard graduate, he entered Harvard when he was 16 years old. People are naturally evil. Jeremiah 17:9 The heart of man deceitful and desperately wicked.

Society likes its deviants to be identifiable a mile away. We don't like to admit that the nice, normal person next door is capable of some horrid crime. By extension, we don't like to think we could do it ourselves. We're "better" than them. So whenever one occurs, we focus on the details that cause the perpetrator to be classified as "other".

Sure, it's all EDITED OUT, but whatever helps society sleep at night...

Because the world thinks things like brilliance, and good looks equate to goodness and are reasons why people, if they had those things, would feel good and not have to resort to doing bad things to make themselves feel better or get what they want. Aren't those the very things the world is striving to get to make life good?

By nature we think good people have good things, and good things going for them. That is how we validate ourselves and others as 'good' and worth something. We can deceive ourselves so easily. Some of the worse people I've ever known were smart, good looking, and had a lot going for them. Remember the kniving class jock, and cheerleader in your high school class? Hardly pictures of virtue, but they seemed that way on the outside by all the worldly measures of goodness we use to determine that.

"They have good things, so they must be good." That truly is a joke.
