I'm done with Vista

I'm running XP Pro X64 but the wife is running Vista. Has been for almost a year.
People just don't need all that hard security at home and I'm getting tired of searching on the net how to get permission to do just about anything we want to do on her computer... user accounts, permissions, passwords... and list goes on and on. Trying to network between the two computers is just plain brutal.
So she decided to go with XP Pro. The CD should be here any day now.
Vista can take a long walk off a short pier as far as I'm concerned.

Successfully went from Vista to XP Pro on a T5088 eMachine.
All apps installed including MSOffice, networking to a color laser printer, Firefox etc Drive C weighs in at a mere 1.59 gig.
:-D

Once they've made yet another fortune then you'll see them whistling a new tune instead of

I just recently migrated from Win 2000 Pro to XP Pro at home. I still use 2000 at work. I will be getting a copy of Vista Business at work to play with. It'll be a dual boot config, so after I brick Vista, I will still have an OS to boot up. :-D

Yes, I do intend on doing everything that's recommended not to do... starting with disabling all it's security features. Jeff, be on standby, I nay need your assistance. ;-)

Well guy's I was going to install Vista but I am not, I will keep XP Pro on this machine ,and buy me a Mac when I get back home. I was running Linux for almost a month Linux is rock solid, but I was not use to it, so I reinstalled XP, but I have to have a Mac, Windows is a royal pain. I still have a 95 and 98 system and they were not as much trouble and the 3.1's ones I had and recently threw out were not this much trouble. And also Vista is a big spy more so than XP Microsoft knows who you are.

I so am not a techie. I got a new laptop and it has vista on it. I just don't get why its supposed to be so good. Its a resource hog (I have a good standard of laptop so it doesn't bother me) the security questions all the time are plain annoying and my husband can't get out old XP computer to connect to this new laptop.
Also I don't know my way around it yet, it took me ages to figure out how to uninstall anything arrr not worth the bother :(

I hear ya Ginger, I want my operating system to to what I want it to do, not what IT wants to do. With a little digging in Vista, it is possible to turn off some of those security features. Windows scoffs, but does it grudgingly.

I was thinking about doing the same. I am still on 2000, the wife's laptop is XP, and at work I use XP Pro X64. I don't need X64 at home but if I were to start my own business doing what I do, I certainly would so it might be worth it. Do you think it would be worth picking up a copy of XP Pro in case I can't get it pre-installed when I get a new computer?

Isn't there supposed to be a new MS OS coming out next year?

I may be done with Vista soon myself, nothing but Gates stuff likes it. I am a tech nic cal id e ot thou, so keeping it for now is just easier. Besides I have a pc with XP 2000 for all things school, etcetera, this ones just for personal play . . . I will offer a hoot for WIN 07 softs, course I never have been out of the Gates box yet. :squarewink:

"Do you think it would be worth picking up a copy of XP Pro"

The way computers are going I wouldn't be sure of the single core processor lasting much longer and installing a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit or better platform wouldn't make much sense. You should be able to pick up XP Pro any time you like anyway so getting it before you get the hardware may not be prudent. MS extended support for XP by five years so even if you do go XP Pro you can get support.
A friend of mine who knows little about computers bought himself a new setup within the average price range of $1500. He has a side business in photography, weddings, birthdays etc, and needed a comp to handle editing and whatever. The saleman steered him to the comp he needed and he's very satified with it.
Anyway, he asked that I come over to get rid of the "bloatware" as it's called. I asked on the phone what CPU, RAM etc he had. He said he didn't really know. Turns out it's a quad-core.
Computers with 8 cores are already out there. And quads are quickly overtaking the duals. That's why I think single core computers are doomed to obsolescence in the near future.

"Isn't there supposed to be a new MS OS coming out next year?"

Singularity? I don't know where MS plans to go with it but right now I believe it's being released only to the academic world working toward further development. It may take a while before it's ready for the public (If that's MS's intent) and I seriously doubt it could be ready this year if so.

Here's how I first remember using Vista. Suppose I just saved a new file "I made this.txt" and now I want to delete it:

Choose delete
Vista reply: cannot delete, file is write-protected.
But, it's my file, I just made it, and it's not write protected!
[retry delete a few times]
Log on as adminstrator. Choose delete.
Vista: Are you sure you want to delete this?
Answer Yes.
Vista: [pause 10 seconds] Do you want to continue?
Answer Yes, already!
Vista: [pause 50 seconds] The file has been removed the the recyle bin.
Choose empty recyle bin.
Vista: Are you sure?
Vista: [pause two minutes] Recycle bin emptied.
Task accomplished!

Vista updates has made it less annoying, but I still run it User Access Control deactivated.

Yes... and it's still available. I know that Tiger Direct sells it for $149.95. I haven't done a price comparison because I have a copy.

BTW, soon after I posted what you quoted, I rebuilt my work workstation and installed XP Pro along w/Ubuntu.

Ok, all you people out there with 2.0 GHz or better hyper-threading CPUs and related MBs, send them to me! I'll make good use of them for sure. :D ...starting with you Rick. :lol
