Bible Study Importance of the Blood ?

Angel

I'm reading Leviticus.

Why did blood have to be shed for forgiveness? Why did they sprinkle the animal's blood on the altar? What does it mean?

Because the animal sacrifices in the Old Testament pointed forward to the one, finished sacrifice and shedding of the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament. (See 1 Peter 1; Hebrews chapters 9 and 10, etc.)

After Adam and Eve sinned, their nakedness was now exposed; therefore, the LORD GOD sacrificed animals in order to properly cover their nakedness. Thus, the first sacrifice and the pattern for mankind to follow, which meant the blood of the lamb was to be shed for the remission (covering) of sin. Of course, once Jesus's blood was shed, who is the Lamb of GOD, no further sacrifices are required, nor have any purpose.

Why was Jesus the once and for all sacrifice? (Please forgive me, I just want clarification for my own heart, I'm not trying to sound rude- just seeking answers.)

Angel:

Good question, and Scripture itself supplies an answer.

'Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many' (Hebrews 9.28). The blood of bulls and goats in the Old Testament could never take away sin; they were merely taken as a covering temporarily while Old Testament saints waited for the coming, perfect sacrifice.

If you take time to read all of Hebrews chapters 9 and 10, this will be very helpful in pointing exactly to the area you are wanting to know more about. We as sinners need the Savior, and these chapters tell us all about His perfect, sin atoning sacrifice.

Thank you Farouk! I found this verse and my question is answered! :)

Hebrews 9:22 [In fact] under the Law almost everything is purified by means of blood, and without the shedding of blood there is neither release from sin and its guilt nor the remission of the due and merited punishment for sins.

Angel:

Well, exactly; YW, and you know, there is also a short book in the New Testament which both speaks of the great significance of the blood of Christ and with a whole purpose of encouraging much assurance of eternal life among believers, and this is John's First Epistle, after 2 Peter. It won't take long to read but it's wonderfully searching and assuring. :)

Blessings.
