Consecrated Life, Jesus is clearly testing the young man's elevation in his mind to the status of being on God's level. The problem is that rich young ruler's idolizing humans instead of relying on God alone. Here is a Person of God standing in front of him and he thinks that Jesus is a human as important as God himself, the way many people today elevate humans by getting their advice and decrease God by failing to pray to him, for example.
Jesus wants the young man to dethrone himself and his reliance on his teachers and wealth from being his gods. Thus, he tries to get at his real need of getting rid of his covetousness in getting more and more wealth, the commandment that Jesus omits in his list of the second table of the ten commandments.
His message, in essence, is to stop elevating yourself and your teachers with whom you replace God in your life and get rid of those idols. Jesus isn't denying his deity, which he asserts many times, especially in the Gospel of John, but he is teaching the man to worship and serve the true God, of whom he is a Person.
