Do you think there are jobs Christians should avoid? That would be at odds with being a good Christian?
The obvious sex industry comes to mind. But I am more interested in the sales industry. You know. Real estate or selling cars. Telesales. Hardcore pressure sales. Someone has to do those jobs . It is a job I have avoided anyway. maybe because I am not good at sales. But pressing someone to buy something. That is a real moral dilemma. Sales commissions can motivate people in the wrong way. Greed, status. God would have to take a backseat in all this surely.

And maybe "prosperity gospel' thinking would justify such a career. I am just writing my thoughts. No conclusions reached yet.

Oh I forgot the military. Quakers and pacifists refuse to fight ? Is that correct? I wouldn't choose the military for other reasons. Fear of getting injured or killed being one of them.

By the way, if you want to watch a good movie about the pressure sales industry, I recommend, Glengarry Glenross. Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino and another guy whose name escapes me at the moment. Sad and chilling.

Lineman, yeah they are at risk.a few of them, die after a hurricane restoring power .that's not for the timid .

Corrections ,unarmed men with 100s of inmates who might want you dead

Fear of being killed,oh,I remember that first firefight ,covid 19,reminds me of my,time ,can't go anywhere ,the threat might kill me while i sleep, eat, read my,bible .on,duty

A warden ,like any agent of law must start with a clean record and also at the bottom,,in,Florida the warden wears the rank of colonel.

I often need to read your post 3 times to understand...even then....

how would you go as a prison warder? I am too much of a wimp unfort.

Fortunately we have courageous doers like soldiers and firemen. who spend less time on internet forums asking moral dilemma questions and generally wasting time. ooopps self deprecation again sorry....

You,woukdnt .you either join the army as a military police corrections ,or officer ,serve a bit,get out,and join the prison field for a state that allows transfers ,or go to the corrections academy and in either case start from, the bottom
But they may give more rank for military experience .

My,old mos military police of this type ,but in the guard.standards are the same

Of course as you mentioned, there are those super obvious no-no's.

Christians I have known that have taken jobs and quit due to moral issues were in these fields:

-Health Insurance
-Collections
-Social Work/Behavioral Health

Health Insurance because a lot of those call center campaigns tell you to read a script to a member/customer on many questions. However, the company doesn't tell it's workers that a lot of these scripts are lies and beating around the bush. Always think twice before yelling at those health insurance people, often times they are actually doing what they were trained to do and read the stupid script, but the company doesn't tell their workers the true answers on certain topics - especially if they are political or will cost them money.

Collections...well, need I say more?

Social Work and behavioral health...a lot of issues that have come up are unethical solutions and major actions taken with little evidence. Employees being asked to double bill for services to earn the company some money (illegal...helloooo).

I would say avoid call centers at all costs as a Christian...I mean, a lot of them are bad news. Micro-managing, stressful environments, and sometimes being pressed to lie to customers. Not all call centers or campaigns in them are bad, but one must take extra caution.

I question banks as well...I mean, a lot of banks out there are money hungry. There was a bank my husband and I banked with for many years. The last year that we actually had them they were reordering our transactions. Say we would have just gotten paid so we pay our bills, they reordered the transactions to take out his whole pay check and charge us for the overdraft fees by putting it on our credit card that we were not using. We hadn't used our credit card in months as we were trying to pull out of debt. Once we stopped using the credit card and were trying to pay it off, our transactions were being reordered. Some things from posted went to pending. They would take out some transactions completely and then put them back in so we would think we had more money than we did and overspend. I turned off that "overdraft protection" more like, "overdraft kick you over" because we were getting overdraft fees charged to our credit card WITH interest! When calling to complain we were told it must be the companies we were paying or that we simply over spent. No answers. We transfered the balance to another bank and closed our bank account and this has never happened again. We will never bank with that other bank again. So I think some bank's a Christian shouldn't work for because they rob money from people that otherwise can't afford things.

You want to know who talked us into our first credit card? A personal banker at that old bank that ripped us off, but she was a Christian friend. She did not use the word "credit card" once...but offered us something to "build our credit" and assured it doesn't hurt our credit. That was the last time we even saw her. Makes me upset.

I would think car salesman would be challenging. We had a Christian friend that sold us a car at a dealership. He was close to getting fired because he wasn't making that quota (pushing sales on people) We were in dire need and had to have a car that night. It was used and we still paid about 5k more than that car was even worth. That car dealership made a big buck off of us. Thankfully, it is paid off now. It helped in the short run, but hurt us for a while there financially because we were so upside down with that loan. We purchased it upside down.
