Last year during Ladies Retreat at Luther Heights Bible camp, one of the camp councilors spent his weekend off by going on a day hike, only he didn't return. There was a massive search and rescue operation last summer, but due to the extreme terrain, he was not found. This year, a number of folks came back to the camp to do another search for his body. They have found human remains with some of Jon's personal items.
The young man's name was Jon Francis, he was an experienced mountain climber and did indeed make it to the top of Grand Mogul, as he signed the guest book. While the trail was not a simple walk in the woods, it was an established mountain trail that an experienced climber could have expected to walk without much trouble. I say this because there has been what I believe to be a lot of hurtful and unfair critizism of Jon hiking alone, which only adds to the pain and suffering of his family and friends.
I can only guess what the family has gone through this year. I know that they are a family that believes and trusts in God. Jon was a believer and was a youth minister at Ascension Lutheran Church in Ogden, Utah.
If we can please uphold this family, and the church family of this young man's, as well as the 'camp' family as well. I know that Pastor Eric, the camp director, his wife and child, as well as the other councilors were all pretty shaken, but nonetheless trusting that God would work all things to the good.
We are told 'in everything, give thanks'. While this isn't exactly joyful news, it is an answer to prayer, and I do thank God that Jon's family can now bury him and be at peace.
