OK spoilers ahead (I can't review it without talking about the ending) and I am reviewing it from a christian aspect.
I believe this movie could be one of the most anti-christian movies - why?
Some Christians or non-Christians will see the film and say well at least they talked about some christian things, then be happy.
And there is a preview of the movie talking about faith (another twist - you can have faith but faith in the wrong thing!!)
But Satan loves to come and twist things. For those people that he can't convince with atheism - there is nothing else, life is random, there is no purpose etc he wants them to put their faith and hope in something else that's not true. This film is one example, of many that just twist the truth.
Nicholas Cage wife died and is bringing up his son alone, his son tells him, "but you don't believe in heaven". Cage, we find is a scientist who doesn't believe there is a purpose in anything, and that he is a son of a pastor and is estranged from his father.
In the opening scenes we find a girl hearing whispers, and is writing numbers for a time capsule, 50 yrs later, Cage finds the letter, realises there is a pattern to it - that the girl predicted catastrophes.
The girl grows up (is dead) but we find her bible and see a drawing from Ezekiel. Cages' son meanwhile hears whispers and in the end we find the earth is going to be destroyed but the whispers come from aliens who want to take him away in their spaceship but Cage can't go with them as he is not chosen. But somehow Cage knows that they will all be reconciled (universalism reconcilation - anyone?) Apart from the obvious conclusion that the aliens are somewhat God or God is aliens.
What this film does is mix up belief and talk/show the bible but then twist that. There is a scene in which a drawing from Ezekiel shows a sphere before God with the sun behind God. When the aliens come at the end we see the exact sphere in the drawing taking the girl and boy of and we see them in a field with a large old tree in the middle (mixing up the bible again).
A lot of scientists and people believe that there may be an order to our universe but instead of believing in God and His word and following that, they believe aliens could have made our world. :bigcry
So to me the most dangerous films for non believers are the movies that take a small truth and completely twist, lie and change it. So if people say "well there must be some order to the world" satan can come in and use others to tell them "well there may be aliens, who knows" or "just try and be good, we won't know if there is a heaven till we die and if there is a God, you can ask Him then to get into heaven."
We need to as Christians to always point out the truth, and to friends etc who have seen the movie, you can say - 'well OK fiction but you know it's completely wrong - and here's why.'
Oh and there is a lot more that is a lie - but I don't want to get into it all, this post is long enough!
