I got a cramp in the calf of my leg lastnight while I was sleeping. Those hurt like heck.Anyone else get those? My calf has been sore all day because of it.Anyone else get these?

I will get them if I haven't had enough milk in my diet over a period of a couple weeks or so. Once I return to having cereal (with milk), then all is well.

Hmmm....good thought.I know that there are several reasons but I have not found out "why" for me yet.

Could the leg cramps be caused by...........................a lack of chocolate??????????????

But.... :sad I can't have caffeine anymore darn it.I do drink three cups of white tea every day.But white tea has less caffeine than even decaf coffee.I am wondering if I am not drinking enough water :chin

If I remember correctly you are hypothyroid and take a med for it. So do I and I have the same problem with cramping sometimes even where my ankle and knee joints twist.
The meds like synthroid can cause a potassium deficiency, I eat more bananas. The other thing that helps is drinking more water. I usually have more problems when they change my dosage.

A lack of potassium or Mg possibly? That would be hard to test unless you had some blood work done.I used to be on a high dosage of thyroid medicine but my doc had to cut me down.

Well, try milk, water, bananas, and no MG. See what happens. :cool2

Thanks,I think I will drink a bottle of water now.I have a tendency to retain fluids so I have to be careful not to drink too much.

I don't know what you mean by retaining fluids but I have had problems with my hands, feet, and legs swelling for many years. I read this first and then found with me it is true that the more water I drink the less problem I have with retaining fluids. When someone doesn't drink enough water the body goes into conservation mode and retains all that it can for later use. It's the same with people who go on starvation diets the body's metabolism slows down so that it can conserve the little amount of energy source it is getting.

You have not had any problems with congestive heart failure have you?Yes,that is the case with some people but with some it is kind of a fine line. You want to keep the fluids down a bit.Especially if they are eating any salty foods with those fluids and they have a tendency to have a higher blood pressure.

I get the kind of leg cramps you are talking about a lot. It's from dehydration for me. Whenever I get them it's when I've been drinking things that dehydrate, like coffee, and not drinking water. If I start drinking lots of water again, the problem goes away.

It was really hot yesterday,95 degrees. We have no air conditioning now.I was working pretty hard around the house. That could be the case.

No heart problems. I started having problems during my first pregnancy and it just never went away. I can't eat anything salted though.
But water helps a bunch.

I have been amazed, all my life, that water is such a truly universal and effective aid in almost every area of our lives. Yet many of us don't even drink a half gallon a day...... which it seems is the bare minimum we should be drinking.

Leg cramps: My wife also jumped out of bed with these.

Remedy: Could be several things. As with many illnesses that people try drugs over nutrition first, the answer is usually something simple like low magnesium, low potassium, low sodium (salt) or just because one is dehydrated. With my wife, she seemed to improve with increased salt and magnesium, common nutrients that many people are deficient in. She's not been jumping out of bed lately with pain, and I get my sleep now.
