"I love the one God seen in the face of Jesus Christ. From all copies of Jonathan Edwards' portrait of God, however faded by time, however softened by the use of less glaring pigments, I turn with loathing. Not such a God is he concerning whom was the message John heard from Jesus, that he is light, and in him is no darkness at all." -

Hi Willie thanks for replying on my left behind thread.
Don't get me wrong. Before I honestly and truly began reading a "virgin" Bible, (which, admittedly, isn't fully possible, but you can go a long way toward it if you make the effort), I also just went along, and believed in a rapture. So, I also enjoyed the books and original movie.

Good afternoon Willie T, and how are you all? I felt like opening my bible when I read the above post,

Is this: Jonathan Edwards (theologian) whom you are talking about?

I pray to the God of the Bible that I NEVER have to meet Jonathan Edwards' notion of his god.
You won't. That perspective of Jesus is for unbelievers only.

It reminds me of the analogy of the smells. To unbelievers Christ is the aroma of death. But to us he is the aroma of life. Same Jesus, two different aromas.

"15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life." (2 Corinthians 2:15-16 NASB)

I read "Religious Affections", liked it and was going to read more of him. :shrug

What did he preach that wasn't ok?

hell but its often taken not in the full context of his preaching style. if I was ever lead to be a pastor, I would preach hell as a reality and the merciful god willing to forgive. god is slow to anger and wrath. but also will judge man for his sins.

I think the difference might be that Religious Affections was a fairly long treatise that few laymen ever even saw. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God was a Bible-Thumping sermon dramatically designed to horrifically frighten people into running to the front of the church before the floor fell out from beneath them, and they plummeted all the way down into a fiery Hell. (Literally!)

Actually, as I recall, Edwards declared demons were going to drag them down there. (Been many years since I have read either of those.)

I just read the sermon, I think things might have been taken out of context, it could easily be done. He does discuss hell though, but he is preaching on a specific scripture.

You sure you didn't see that in "Ghost" - the Patrick Swayze movie? :)
