Man's Spirit and Flesh – The Image of the Godhead
God is a trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) whereas man is a duality (spirit and flesh).
In physics matter has been shown to exhibit properties of both a particle and a wave simultaneously. This duality of matter, of being both a particle and wave at the same time, was designed by God as a complementary and conformational example of man's duality of existence, of being both spirit and flesh. The Godhead, the trinity, is one being with three manifestations of existence; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
When God created man in his image God didn't just create man as a visual likeness but also a spiritual likeness (in so far as man has a duality of existence of being both spirit and flesh simultaneously). God is a trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) whereas man is a duality (spirit and flesh). Again, man was created by God with both a visual and a spiritual 'likeness' (not exactness).
Throughout mankind's existence man has struggled with understanding his complex being that seems to be always at war with itself. This internal struggle raging inside of man's soul is both a consequence of his creation by God and his sinful condition as a result of Adam and Eve's disobedience in the Garden of Eden.
When God created man he created first his body from the dust of the ground, a visual likeness of God, man's flesh. Then God breathed into man his own breath of life, hence God's spirit was imparted into our flesh. Mankind created in the likeness of God was now complete. Man was now both spirit and flesh, a duality of existence.
But because of mankind's fall in the Garden of Eden man's flesh clamors to be with evil while the spirit yearns to be with good (the knowledge of good and evil). The flesh chases after sin while the spirit seeks out forgiveness for the evil deeds of the flesh. If both spirit and flesh were to become sin then there would no desire, ever, to seek out any goodness (i.e. Satan). When Adam and Eve sinned they corrupted their flesh while their spirit remained untouched for it came from God. God created man from the dust of the ground but breathed the breath of life into him, this describes the duality of man's existence, his flesh and spirit seemingly one but created separately. This is why our flesh and spirit are always in a bitter battle for dominance. Until we can shed our sinful body upon death and be given a new sinless body in heaven, we will never truly have any inner peace.
God came to this world as Jesus Christ to die on the cross in order for those who believe in Christ to shed their sinful flesh and gain an existence with God in heaven forever. It is interesting that a snake, so often a representation of Satan and evil, sheds its skin in the same way that man MUST shed his sinful flesh to regain paradise in heaven with God.
Believe in Jesus Christ and leave your sinful flesh behind to gain life eternal in heaven.
Amen
God Bless
