Cart before the horse, I think. We can show that almost all changes in human skulls over our living and extinct relatives can be shown to be a matter of neotony, i.e. a retention of juvinile characteristics. This is often encountered in evolution.

The evolution of chordates from other dueterostomes seems to have occured that way.

Human jaws likely are lest robust because we retain the relatively smaller jaws, weaker muscles, and larger craniums of young primates.
