[GRAVE OF THE FIREFLY SPOILERS]

Recently, I watched a Japanese animated film called ‘Grave of the Fireflies’. It’s a war story based on an auto biography about a boy and his sister. His sister dies in a very sorrowing scene and in the film the boy dies in the beginning of the movie.
Many, many children from all around the world have died like this without ever knowing Jesus or God.
What happens to these people? Of course they have sinned and the penalty for sin is separation from God but I honestly feel these people haven’t had as fair of a chance as I have been given.

Thanks!

[What happens to those who never knew Jesus?]

I stand in line with this free-access book, https://archive.org/details/salvation-now-and-life-beyond-241212/page/n1/mode/1up. In short, I hold that ultimate life with God (level 4 salvation) was not based on whether you were under the Sinai covenant (level 2 salvation), nor whether you have died under the new covenant (level 3 salvation).

That said, Sinai was a big blessing over the pagan world (level 1 salvation), and Christianity is a big blessing over Moses. Most people have never had a chance to be under Sinai. Most people never have the chance to be under Yeshua. Christianity remains a postcode lottery.

Does God not see the hearts of those who weren’t under Sinai, of those who have never heard a true and core revelation of messiah? I suspect that God does see, and welcomes hearts that welcome him, and permits hearts that do not welcome him to go their own way, whether they have died preborn or from old age, an orientation we are conceived with, hell being a tolerable only to those orientated towards it. Biblical salvation/damnation data is limited, and many theories exist, but all theories must prioritise the more complete data we have on God’s nature.

I honestly feel these people haven’t had as fair of a chance as I have been given.

Is God just? Is God merciful? Is God holy?

Psalm19:
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Matthew7:7 ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.'

God has made himself known to those who are searching for him.

these people haven’t had as fair of a chance as I have been given.
Isaiah 55:8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

What we fickle sinners think is fair doesn't apply to God.

Luke 12:47 And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

Those who did not know yet committed things deserving of stripes still got beaten. According to Paul, everybody no matter how ignorant, all did things deserving of stripes.

Romans 2:12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law . . .

I think by "law" Paul means the Torah or the revelation God gave to Israel.

Romans 3:10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

And for the context, Paul says "as it is written" means it came from the Old Testament and was originally written against the people in Israel. But now Paul is universalizing it and applying it to everybody.

You have to accept God as He has revealed Himself to us, and not make up some peace loving hippie who wouldn't hurt a fly in order to fit your idea of what God should be like. That is called Idolatry.

Why do you think they sinned ?
Was there something in the movie that showed their sin ?

I agree with Isiah 55:8. I know nothing of Gods plan and maybe I’m ignorant but, I feel since I was young I at least knew who Jesus was and only turned to him when I was 15. I know many children around the world haven’t heard his name. I’m not trying to make up a character for God, it’s just from what i’ve read in the Bible so far. I just want to know if what happens to these people is in the Bible

Jesus made it very clear that we get to God the Father, that is to get into heaven, only, only through faith/belief in Jesus.
You have probably heard John3:16 For God so Loved countless times, but have you actual read that verse and the following verses:-
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

May I suggest that you get involved in supporting missionary work in your church and if they don't support a missionary start asking questions.

I try not to concern myself with questions I can't answer but prefer to trust God and leave it in His care. Questions like this can lead to doubts and that is not good. In fact, I wonder if it is possible that Satan puts these kinds of questions before us to add confusion.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I understand your question and concern. However there is an interesting verse at the end of John's Gospel that can be expanded:

John 21:25
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that *would be written.

And that was just Jesus for the 33 or so years He was on earth. What about the Father who has been dealing with us humans for thousands of years? The Bible leaves many issues unanswered, and this is one of them. So people have made up doctrines to fill in the holes; which in my opinion is a very dangerous thing to do. It is exactly trying to make up something in God's character, which could very easily make up some false God, some "other Jesus."

Thank you for this response. I will trust God

I think it is good to ask questions though because I feel it strengthens your faith because you know more when you get your questions answered
