What a yawn. Why do people exaggerate so much? The prep is really not bad at all, the stuff they gave me to drink was a lot (over 89 ounces) but none of it was gag-awful. The first round, which I mixed with Ginger Ale, I could drink with any meal and be happy.

The 64 oz of Gatorate with something in it was not great, kinda bland, but not bad at all.

The worst part was the all liquid diet all day yesterday - and the thirst and hunger this morning.

I looked at the clock just as the anesthetic took my consciousness away, it was 9:38. When I awoke, it was 10:02. The doctor found a redundant colon (apparently every descendant of my Mom has one) and one polyp that he removed.

No big deal. I go in for a CT scan of the redundant part (the last 8 inches or so) in a few weeks, but the doctor does not think he will find anything, based on how 3 feet in there was fine.

A lot of it is the idea... full colonoscopy? only one polyp ? :woot2

From what I've heard, you basically have to sit on the toilet for 3 days before you have a colonoscopy. That doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

There are three feet in your colon?! What are thee feet doing in your colon? That's just freaky!

Ooh, colonoscopy. Went through my first one almost six years ago. Wouldn't have been any big deal except for waking up in the middle of it, although only long enough to have feeling and hear the nurse announce I was conscious. Be glad when you stay sleeping. Yikes!

See, that is an exaggeration. I started prep yesterday at 3pm. Was not tied to the bathroom until after 5:30 -from that point to about 3am, I had to stick close!
It just is not the big deal people make it out to be - at least, not with today's techniques and preparations.

I was worried about that. Told the doctors (anesthesiologist and Colon guy) and they took my fear to heart and the anesthesiologist said, "Oh, don't worry, my whole job is to keep an eye on you while he does the procedure. If you remember anything, you can punch me in the mouth." I know they have to be careful to balance the need to keep you under, but to not put you under far enough that you are in danger.

They had to have had me really out, I awoke much slower than last spring for the conversion. I also could not walk properly for about ten minutes.
But no other effects at all - was in Cracker Barrel in 40 minutes eating! :)

In practical terms, it's no big deal. In psychological terms? No one like the idea of a long black thing pushed up his butt. :eek2

This may be gross to some folks.... i woke up in my first one .. It was cool i watched them remove a polyp. :shrug

For SOME weird reason, in 1998, my sister's was done with minimal anesthetic and she was awake and watching the MONITOR the whole time.

That is what freaked me out at first - when I told the doctor that was why I would not get one, he assured me that he would never permit a patient to be "present" in such a way for a procedure he was doing.

I would have to be quite tippy and drugged to go along with that.

So they're giving out free colonoscopys at the nuke plant there in Bridgman, eh?

Things have changed since the last time I was there.

If nuke plants gave colonoscopies, they would cost 20 times more, take four months to schedule and three days to perform.

Okay, I won't ask why you couldn't walk properly. :hysterical

A former coworker of mine had a colonoscopy, and he was away from work for 3 or 4 days because of it. I know it's an exaggeration to say you have to be on the toilet all the time, but he said that's the way he put it. My doctor encouraged me to get one (I haven't) and he described it pretty much the same way. He said the procedure itself wasn't so bad, but sitting on the toilet for 3 days before wasn't nice.

For me it wasn't three days. If I recall correctly, I began taking the laxatives and such about 24 hours ahead of the procedure. I do know that by the time I was done taking the liquids, I had to be sitting down when I drank them. It seemed to go through me that fast.

Same. It was about 24 hours.
