When my husband and I faced the fact that I was unable to carry a child to term we decided to go the adoption route, rather than the fertility route. Basically for the simple reason that there are so many children out there who need a home.
If one truly wants to go for fertility methods, one needs to prayerfully consider the options. Some options are perfectly innocuous, they simply involve helping the bodies of both the man and woman become more receptive to conception. A good friend of mine has a girl that was concieved via these means. Other options involve the creating then destroying of embryos, or the creation of the 'litter'- having 3 to 6 children at a time. When we were discussing these options with our doctor, he was very adamant that these methods were not considered ethical by many in the field. We didn't consider them either.
As for surrogacy, I figured, if someone else was going to be carrying my baby for me, why not just adopt. I have two wonderful kids and they are MY kids even though they don't have the same eye color, hair color or even skin color. If one wants to adopt a baby, then the cost of adoption is pretty much equal to the cost of fertility specilists. If one is willing to adopt foster kids though, hey, most states often pay you.
